Chances for BC, UVA, GWU, and Emory w/ debate

Aloha. To be 100% honest, I'm a junior so the AP scores are not exact but estimates, the SATs are though, and everything else is. I have a very demotivational guidance department, so I wanted to get another opinion about these schools, they say I have a shot, but continuously recommend the same schools (BU, Providence College, Umass) to every student, regardless of where they are in academics, so perhaps someone can help me.

So, the basics...
GPA- 3.65 on a 4 scale
SAT- M:66, V:69, CR(based on PSATs):66 (all of these were last fall, so im assuming they should go up at least a little)

Freshmen year: 2 honors (max 3), (bad guidance yet again recommending that i only take 1, luckily i went against them, but still not that many, this is where my GPA is brought down)

Sophomore year: 3 honors (max 4), 5 A's, 2 B's in each semester.

Junior year: 2 APs, 3 honors. AP US History -5, AP Language -4 (both predictions based upon performance this year)

Senior year: 3 APs, 3 honors. AP Psych, AP Stats, AP Literature (maybe AP econ, but it would be VHS and i would lose Honors Physics, which could be a problem, so im gonna predict 3 APs and 3 honors.

EC's:
1. Debate Team: President (12), deputy treasurer (11). Outstanding Distinction (points ranking system, 2nd highest possible), national finalist at Harvard, Yale, Villiger, and semi-finalist at both national tournaments last year.
2. Attended the Florida Forensics Institute to further my debate experience, both senior and junior year. (2 week intensive debate institute)
3. School newspaper: Managing Editor (10), Editorials Director (11), Editor in Chief (12).
4. Internship for state Representative over the summer, both last summer and this upcoming summer.
5. Yearbook Editor (9,10,11,12)
6. National Honors Society (hopefully, for next year)
7. Mentor in a big brother like program...

so that's where I am folks, I live in Massachusetts and attend a well respected public high school. Thanks for any insight you could possibly have.

I don't know about the others, but UVa will be a reach for you because you are out of state.

I applied to both BC and Emory. Let me tell you what happened.

I'm well-qualified for both schools, according to their stats. (I don't wish to share this information, though)

Well, I got flat out rejected from BC the day before Christmas. My counselor's brother is an admissions counselor at BC (and he put in a good word for me..) plus I knew some other counselors there. Well, the main reason people were rejected was because we're not from Catholic high schools. It's true. Sucks, but it's true.

So, Emory. I had a LOT of problems with Emory. They lost my application twice, then cashed the check they supposedly lost. Then they sent me a 3-sentence rejection letter, which really sucked. My friend's mother is a professor at Emory, and she wrote my recommendation. I know 4 people on admissions at Emory. I still didn't get in.

I don't mean to bash anything about you, but I just wanted to lay out the facts. It's a harsh reality, which I've had to deal with.

just out or curiosity, where did you end up going?

I'm still a high school senior struggling to maintain decent grades for the last semester. :)

I applied to 9 schools, and I've only heard from 2. I'll let you know where I get accepted when the 1st comes around.

Ummm I think you have a good shot at George Washington. Try looking at some other schools (research it on your own, not through guidance)
ps-I don't think national honor society means a whole lot college-acceptance wise, but it is still a nice honor!

i understand that UVA prefers instate to out of state, but with that said, how are my chances as an out of state applicant?

you applied to BC ED and got rejected? I waiting for a response still. What were your stats?

BBDarlin: That's horrible! There are always stories like that unfortunately. This whole process is so tricky and stressful. I wish you luck on the other schools.

Might want to consider Holy Cross or Villanova. Holy Cross has a very good academic reputation.

I'm not an expert in this, but I'd say you've got approximately 40~45% chance as an OOS applicant. As far as I know, most successful OOS applicants are ranked in the top 5% in HS and have an SAT score of at least 1400.

fierro2005, yeah, I applied EA. Apparently, BC only accepted/deferred a small percentage (I think the counselor said 15%) of the people who applied early.

I don't want to reveal my stats. According to my sister (who is on admissions at UPenn), I was well-qualified enough to get into Penn without her help. I didn't apply to Penn, though.

FishS, thank you! We'll see what happens. I'm going through the same situation I went through with Emory with another school currently... oh, how schools hate me. They keep losing EVERYTHING.

i can respect that. its weird that they accepted only 15%. EA is supposed to increase your chances. and normall the school accepts a little more than 30%.

please, someone, advice regarding emory and whether im ok with GWU?

Oh.. I applied EA to BC as a member of class of 2009 and got in. I just sent my ACT score which was 33, along with 4 AP scores (5,5,4,4). My GPA was about 4.3 and i'm from public high school. Although I'm not going to attend BC, I really like the school. Hope this helps your admissions process. Good LUCK!

Semi-Finalist at all those tournaments?? In what event?

I checked over records from last year and I don't seem to find anyone from Mass who was a sophmore that broke at those 3. For an accurate review from the rest of us.. don't overexaggerate or make up your stats.

nvm questioning his integrity--these stats are true. oh, and he's in congress.

well i got into emory with similar SAT scores (lower SAT II's though) but I'm a URM.

semi-finalist at NFLs, CFLs, and Harvard...and because i have to prove it, here are the link for harvard...
http://www.harvard-debate.org/downloads/HHS2004/Download_27.pdf
and check the NFL rostrum for the other 2.

thanks for the help everyone
