chances for biomedical engineering

my buddy applied to texas and is convinced he won't get in.

these are his stats:

White Male (in state)

ranked 230/1260

ACT: 34

Varsity Basketball and Club Basketball

was enrolled in the full IB diploma program.

what do you guys think, I think he's got as good a shot as anyone not in top 10%

accepted in UT? low chance. accepted to biomed? no chance.

think so? I thought he would’ve had a great chance since he’s got such a high ACT score.

true, but he’s in the top 18.3% and school rank very important to them. if he does get accepted by his act score, he still will have an incredibly hard chance to get into his desired major.

but getting into biomed is very very unlikely since they mostly focus on the top 2-3% so i’ve heard.

Increasingly very selective colleges/programs look more at class rank and GPA. They want the cream of the crop from each school. If they can find enough applicants in the top 2-3% with decent SAT or ACT scores, why bother with the top 15-20%?

So unless there is a reason to believe that your buddy is as good as anyone in the top 2-3% from other schools, I don’t think he’s got a chance. UT biomed engineering only accepts about 100 students each year and they have plenty of excellent applicants to choose from.

If UT’s like it was 7 years ago when my brother applied, he’s definitely getting into the school. My brother got in for electrical engineering with similar ranking and similarly high SAT (1510 on the old scale) which is prtty much the same as your friend’s ACT.

I think he’ll get into UT fine… (depending on his 2nd choice major.)
but Biomedical Engineering is a Big stretch =X…even with such a nice ACT score…

We were there Sat for the Rise&Shine event. Biomed only has around a 100 slots and they said that 75% are filled from the top 1-3% rankers. That leaves 25 slots for EVERYONE else including those ranked 4-10%. I have to say ‘no chance’…sorry!
