Chances for boarding schools (Exeter, Berkshire, etc...)

I am a white male that is going into 9th grade next year and I wanted to know my chances of being accepted to these five B.S's-Holderness School, (safety) Kent School, (average)
Berkshire School, (average) Blair Academy, (average) and finally, Exeter. (Reach) Thanks for all of your time! :)

Grades- (8th Grade)
Mathematics (9th grade Regents honors)-95
English-100
Social Studies-100
Science-99
Spanish-95

(It is probable that the 9th grade averages will be similar)

Extracurriculars-
Basketball-6 Years-JV-9 Hours/Week
Biking-5 Years-5 Hours/Week
Guitar-5 Years-5 Hours/Week
Debate-4 Years-5 Hours/Week
Italian-2 Years-3 Hours/Week
Peer Tutoring-2 Years-3 Hours/Week

Interviews-I am excellent with adults and in thinking on my feet. I am humble and have practiced interviews before. I have a passion for debate and philosophy which I think is unique and I plane to emphasize this come time for interviews.

I am Jewish and I speak fluent Hebrew and hope this will separate me from the rest of the applicants.

SSAT- Last year with little study I achieved an 86 Overall-
91-Verbal
77-Mathematics
74-Reading

Will Need full FA, but if I do not recieve full, I will get a loan from the bank. This has been talked through with my parents.

What Are my chances at each of these schools? Thanks so much! :D

Your stats are good for all except Ex. I would probably add in one or two more ESA schools as reaches. Who knows, you could get a break and get into one of the other eight.

Thank you. I would have to do research to choose the school that I want then, from Andover to S.P.S. I forgot to mention though that the regents class was the one class that my school offered that was “above average”. Also I did not add all of the clubs from next year that I already chose to take for H.S. The awards I’ve received in addition to this is Summa Cum Laude eight times in a row and an award from a well-known college in my area for academic excellence. What more would I need to be a contender for Exeter?

Also, on the Regents exam, I got an A- and will take advanced Spanish and Mathematics next year. (The only advanced classes avaliable to me right now) If I will have enough time, I will join the tennis team as well, because I have been playing tennis for 2 years.

Buump~!!!

It’s really good that you have such diverse interests, and that you show continuity with each of them. My advice is to focus on one or two TRUE passions that you can highlight throughout the application process. You and I have very similar 8th grade statistics–and I’m guessing that you’re from NY because of the regents grades, like me! If you’re uncomfortable with your SSAT scores, you could retake them, but I think anything above an 85 puts you in a great position. However, I’m no expert. But still, I think the grueling year of applications has given me enough experience. (:

Of course I’m a huge Andover cheerleader, too. Andover has a need-blind policy. If you need full aid, I definitely recommend making Andover your “reach” school!

Cassat, when you state only focus on one or two passions, are you suggesting in the Candidate Profile only to list two activities? Did you list more, but only focused on two in the essays?

I think Cassat means to list all of the activities that I do, but to focus on two activities in the essays and in the interview and such. Moreover, thanks so much Cassat! I will do that! I was actually quite content about the 86 Percentile, but know that it is not enough and that I can do much better with a bit of study, which I have begun in addition to the essays which I plan on starting soon so that I will not have to focus on them as much come application time. I think I will make Andover my “Reach” school! What more though can I do to boost my chances? Also, do you think that I am at all competiton to the talented applicants of Andover? I appreciate all of your help! :D

Bump~~~~!!

Oh no, I listed soooo many activities on my candidate profile! You might want to list all that you do, because a lot of times, teachers and coaches will get lists of which students are interested in what. But during the interview and on the essays, if the situation calls for it, really highlight what you excel in. For me, that was music, dance, and writing.

Don’t worry yourself sick over the process. I realized I wanted to apply in mid-September, and finished my applications only in mid-January. I didn’t start essays until maybe December. You’ll be fine. And from what I can tell, you seem like the students I’ve met at the Andover receptions. Really. You seem passionate and intelligent, two things which ANY school will value! Acceptance is so unpredictable. I believe someone from Andover said that 70% of applicants are academically admissible. Just try to show who you really are. Don’t worry about name-dropping obscure authors in your interview, or throwing around pretentious words. That’s not what will get you into a school. Just don’t play the “admission game.” In my Andover interview, I talked about a pretty obscure interest of mine that really had no bearing on my academic life, but I think it’s what made the situation memorable! Just be YOU.

ALSO, last point-- you should try to e-mail people affiliated with the schools you like! For example, the music director if you’re interested in guitar. When you set the date of an interview, ask to meet with them! I remember at the Andover spring revisit, I was meeting some adults and one teacher immediately recalled my name because I had e-mailed the director of his department months prior!

Sorry for rambling… :stuck_out_tongue: I’m just excited to help with this! Haha

Wow you’re so nice! Thank you for the entire relpy, it was really quite informative. I also appreciate the compliment! : ) I think I will also add swimming onto the candidate profile
(5 years) which is an activity that I love to do in the spare time that I have, it’s just tha until recently I wasn’t aware that Andover had a swimming program. Hah! The activities that I am most passionate about are Basketball, Debate, and Cycling. I will attempt to highlight those as best as I can. I truly am thankful for your reply, because I’ve been so worried about this entire process, I’ve even begun to write the short-responses! It’s funny, actually, I have thought about talking about those such others! I’ll keep that in mind though, although I always am “myself”, if that make sense. : P In an interview, the interviewer begins by asking a question, right? I think I will do fine, because in my Exeter interview, I felt as if I was conversing with a friend almost, in spite of formal “feel” in the office where it was held. I have wanted to send e-mails to coaches, and I think I will to the Basketball and Cycling coaches. Andover does have a debate team, right? Who would I send an e-mail to then concerning my passion for debate and things like that? That’s so cool; it seems everyone in Andover is so kind, and now I see why you were accepted : D. Thank you so much again! I appreciate all of your time! You are really really nice.

Awww, you’re so sweet! (: If you want, just private message me and I’ll give you my e-mail/other form of contact info in case you have other questions or just want to talk!

Andover has the Philomathean Society, which is the oldest high school debate team in the country. I’m not sure who the advisor is, though… I’ll ask around. I know that they’re exceedingly successful during the year!

And yep, the interviewer will generally ask you the first questions. My interviewer was so kind, and so welcoming when I got into the school. So many of the teachers are super nice, and they’re all really passionate about what they do. (:

Wow that is so cool. I know I’ll want to join that “society”. : P Do you have an aim? If u don’t feel comfortable, that’s fine, we can just pm each other. I think if I get into Andover, you’ll be my first friend. haha! I

I have Facebook and AIM, take your pick! And aw that’s sweet, I’d be honored to be your first friend! You’ll have to let me know when you’re interviewing, I’ll try to meet up with you!

:D Thanks I will! That would be awesome!

Sorry this sis upset random but I just came across this post… where did you end up decideung to go?

@cababe97 You can search post histories if you want answers to questions like that. This OP posted in the fall of 2011 that he was applying again as a repeat 9th grader, and he hasn’t been back to CC since then.
