Chances for Boston college

Looking to get into bc
20th out of a class of 523 (might go up)
GPA: 100.4 weighted, so around a 4.1
SAT: 2060 (looking to get that up into 2100s at least this fall)
SubJect Tests: 740 on us history, 690 on literature, 620 on math 2 (low, I know)
APs: APUSH and AP lang and comp junior year, ap Econ ap calc ap French ap lit and possibly ap environmental senior year
Officer of NHS, secretary of my honors choir, 4 year student council member and 1 year as a committee chair, 6years of voice lessons and 4 years of piano, member of drama club and participated in school musicals with some lead roles, humanities scholars collaborative, wellsley college book award, French honor society, math honor society, french national exam certificate of successs and certificate of honor, 8 years of youth soccer, at least 100 hours of community service locally, part time job for 3 years.

This list goes on but do my scores and stuff look alright? I even have some alumni connections (a couple great uncles) which may be a reach but who knows. Have a great essay that my ap Lang and comp teacher loved, and strong teacher recs on the way.

Any chance?

Also sat breakdown: 670 cr, 660 math, 730 writing… I’m also Irish catholic and a pretty active member of a catholic church if that helps at a Jesuit school?

my priest always jokes that there are catholics then jesuits…haha…I don’t know if your activity in the church will help you, but it could show a passion of yours. For example, if you could coincide that with like a service trip it could look very good.

SAT score is a little low but pretty much on target. GPA seems strong. Your ECs dont stand out that much…they just look like you took certain random activities to get into college. I realized that one of the most important factors in college admissions is whether you have a strong passion and how you will develop that at the college you’re applying to. You must be applying to BC for a reason, it should be an academic reason, and you should have an idea of how BC can truly cultivate whatever your strongest interest is. Definitely show this in your essays and you stand a good shot.

I appreciate your input thanks! I was thinking of playing up my experience in the theater/music departments… In my essay perhaps? Maybe how my experience speaking on stage made me more comfortable with myself and in front of crowds so I was able to translate that to my classroom experience with oral reports, etc… I’m looking to get into the business school if at all possible. Think I have a shot?

I think you definitely have a shot but I am just a little confused…if you are interested in theatre and music why do you want to do business? If music is truly your passion you will want to enhance that at BC and major in that.

Caroll is pretty selective but you are a decently strong candidate. How is your math sat score? your math subject test is a little low for most top biz schools.

You raise an excellent point. I’ll have to do some soul searching this summer and find a creative way to highlight my passion for bc in my essay. Its not that im not passionate about my schoolwork, my volunteer work, or my experience in theater/music, I think I just need to find a clever way to sell myself. I realize that, frankly, there are literally thousands of other applicants who will probaly seem just like me to the admissions board at BC. Gotta figure out how to set myself apart from them, if only it were that easy…

On another note, SAT math is definitely my weakest point, which I find odd since Ive consistently done well in math throuout high school… I really enjoy math! I’m looking to raise my SAT 1 math score from a 660 to a 700 this October which I know I can do with some diligent prep and I’m considering retaking the math 2 in November since I got a 620 on it the first time around… I figure between my time in ap calc next year as well as more prep I can get that score up to at least a 670,680 if not 700

Keep in mind admissions counselors know that as a college freshman you are not going to have your whole life figured out. Many students change their mind and major a lot. I think they just want to see someone who has a strong interest in something outside of the classroom and who is looking to develop it while at BC. I think you will do well in this aspect as you do your “soul searching.”

It would be prudent to try and get your math score up a bit. I don’t know BC’s policy on score choice or superscore…in other words if you retake the SAT and raise your math to a 700 but fall in the other two categories, that might hurt your chances. If you find math 2 a little challenging you could always do math 1. I don’t think BC’s biz department would view that as a cop out…highly competitive biz schools might like Upenn’s wharton or MIT’s sloan. I truly hope you get in best of luck!

you have a good chance, i wouldn’t send that mat SAT II though

You cannot transfer into CSOM but you can transfer into A&S. Just FYI because the business school is VERY selective and no one really transfers out of it.

Not sure if anyone can answer this but I’m planning on applying to bc early action so I’m taking the sats one more time in October to get my score over 2100 and then I was planning on retaking math two in November and also sending in my us history sat 2.

So number 1: will my sat reasoning test in October be back in time for me to send it in by November 1st?
And number 2: is it true that I can send in my math 2 subject test by the deadline if I directly designate bc as a recepient when I take the test?

If not, ill probably have to hold off and send my application in regular decision. But I’d love to get it in as early as possible… Thanks in advance!

IMO, the 690 Lit score is good enough. Sure, anything that starts with 7 (or 8!) is better, but a 710 math score is statistically the same as a 690 Lit score, adn Lit is generally considered a harder test. Do you have reason to believe that your M2 score will increase by 100 points?

A 1400/2100+ would be a good boost to your app. I would advise EA even with the October retake.

Search the BC thread for posts by scottj, who has excellent advice for crafting a good essay/personal statement for BC.

Good luck.

thanks for the info! but if I’m applying to CSOM at bc, do you think a 700+ math 2 score would look better than the 690 lit? I’ve heard most top b-school like to see a solid background in math… I’m willing to wait and apply regular decision if the math score will boost my application. I’d rather not take any chances, as I’m very interested in bc and don’t want to rush anything with the chance that sub-par scores would hurt my chances of admission

Yes, a 700+ will definitely help at csom, particularly if you are a guy. If you struggle with SAT-style math questions, you might consider the ACT, which is much more straightforward.

But still, a 100 point jump in M2 will take quite a bit of work, and there usually ain’t much time during senior fall.

Did you get in?

^^this is a 2-year old thread, so the OP is likely long gone.
