Chances for Brown (and others)?

-3.85/4.0 GPA, school does not rank but I fall within about the top 10% about
-PSAT: 217 I'm anticipating somewhere in the 2200s on the real SAT
-AP US History: 5 (A+ in class)
currently taking AP Comparative Gov. and Politics and AP Bio. (A in both, anticipating a 5 in both), taking hardest classes possible
-Attend a highly selective Jesuit Prep School (about 30% acceptance rate), with wicked grading and track record of feeding into Ivies (+ Georgetown/Northwestern): 90% is a B, and weighting is nearly non-existent
-Both parents and brother did undergrad at Northwestern, father also did med. school, residency, fellowship and was on faculty there, and sister goes to Northwestern Law School.
-Sister attended Georgetown
-Model UN: Exec. board, awards at McGill and Northwestern Universities within the past 12 months, architect and chair for US National Secy. Council at a 200-delegate conference hosted by my school coming up
-Forensics/speech: Senior member, various awards
-Piano for 12 years
-Something more minor regarding personal statements and such, I am gay and have survived a rare autoimmune disease (I'm not joking on that one, lol)...which is important for who I am
-Did CTD at Nortwestern (sem. of Ecology, A), summer 2003
-Did the International Relations Progam at Georgetown, summer 2004
-Registered for Harvard SSP for summer 2005 (taking Int'l Relations and Spanish)
-200+ volunteer hours in HS

Current Classes: AP Bio., AP Comparative, Pre-Calc H, British Lit., "Images of Humanity: Philosophy, Chrsitology, and Ethics", Spanish III H (everything but the APs are core classes, which are generally not tracked-every class is assumed to be at an honors or double-honors level at a conventional high school)

My top choice school is Brown. I am an incredibly independent, driven, and self-starting individual. My grades may not be quite what they should be, but I am extremely passionate about my main interest (international relations), and think I am a great ideological fit for Brown. My current school has tons of requirements for its core curriculum which I have found very stifling, and I have been ready to move on for some time (hence liking Brown for a lack of a core and ability to pursue solely what I am interested in).

Northwestern is my big fallback safety school and I don't necessarily have any others except maybe George Washington. I'd consider applying to Wash U. except I don't really like St. Louis. I should get into McGill without too much trouble, and hopefully I won't get wait-listed at Georgetown (SFS).

So basically the major bulk of schools I will be applying to other than those are Ivies where I am pretty much "on the fence" I guess. It all comes down to Brown, though. Like I said my school tends to dump people into Ivies and near-Ivies (especially Cornell, everyone who applies gets in), but to my knowledge barely anyone ever applies to Brown.

Just wonder what everyone thinks my chances are. I'll be applying to Harvard, Yale, Stanford, NYU, Columbia, McGill, Brown, Northwestern, GW, Georgetown, Tufts, and University of Chicago.

Your sheet looks great, but I don't think Northwestern should be a safety school.

Northwestern? Safety? That is a really pompous thing to say, I hope you get rejected just for that.

I agree. There is nothing wrong w/ being fairly sure you will get in Northwestern, but it is not an easy enough safety that it can be your only safety.

"-Both parents and brother did undergrad at Northwestern, father also did med. school, residency, fellowship and was on faculty there, and sister goes to Northwestern Law School.

Come on, guys. Cut him some slack, I think Northwestern seems like a pretty safe bet for him.

wow, missed over all the legacies. yes i suppose it's safe, but still look at some other top 10-20 schools as back-ups just in case. You never know w/ these things.

Didn't mean to sound pompous with Northwestern guys...lol...but my family really does bleed purple. My bro got in with a 3.5/1500, so I think I'll be okay (although he made it very clear that it was the one school he was interested in). Then again, Northwestern's applicant pool has gotten substantially better in the past five years...

Rule one of College Admissions:

Nothing is certain

Northwestern is not a safety! When rejection letters from top 20 schools arrive don't be to surprised.

don't be so sure about northwestern, my friend has two siblings that went to that school and she still got rejected with a 3.8

-Something more minor regarding personal statements and such, I am gay and have survived a rare autoimmune disease (I'm not joking on that one, lol)...which is important for who I am

wow.. the way its phrased, im guessing many people take it as a joke.. lol (sorry).

anyways.. to the real business... legacy does to a substantial part (though i dont get why -_-) your background (not scores), should be a good shot for getting in, im guessing your a minority group.

"don't be so sure about northwestern, my friend has two siblings that went to that school and she still got rejected with a 3.8"

His father was on the faculty, and he has a bit more of a legacy than your friend. I'd say Northwestern is fairly safe.

Yeah, its safe. And NU hasnt gotten that much more competitive over the years like some other places.

How about the OP's chances for his/her first choice school- Brown?

northwestern as a safety?..right
