I’m a junior in California and want to know, as honestly as possible, what my chances would be for Brown PLME.
Demographics:
Asian female, middle class, no hooks/legacy unfortunately
Stats:
SAT 1 1560(770 r/w, 790 m 8/8/8 essay)
SAT II Math Level 2 800, taking Biology
PSAT 1510(likely national merit semifinalist in CA)
AP/ Courseload: Sophomore year course load: Ap calculus AB/ BC(5) Ap Computer science, AP Chemistry(4), AP World History(5)
Junior Year Courses: AP Biology, AP Physics 1, AP US History, AP Psychology, AP Environmental Science, AP English Language, AP Art History
GPA 4.0 unweighted, 4.8 weighted
EC’s:
Paid research internship for 2 years as part of competitive life science program
Internships in clinical research from freshman year- first author publication in peer reviewed journal
Publishing 2 papers in cancer research
presented original research at a national conference
Science fair awards for neuroscience research, president of GWC and founded outreach programs to the middle school and teaching STEM to girls with autism
Provisional patent filed for healthcare device
women in computing awards, won an app challenge related to women empowerment
Volunteer at an arts workshop for cancer patients and a free clinic, starting an arts program for other patients, founded a nonprofit to help cancer patients
Basically my EC’s are pretty pointed towards healthcare and research but I want to showcase arts/computer science as well.
As part of my fall semester i will also be doing EMT training and hope to work as an EMT in college.
PLME would be a dream come true and as an undergrad I would love to major in cognitive neuroscience or public health, or create my own major in cancer biology.
For letters of rec, would a comp sci and biology teacher be acceptable? How many supplemental letters would I be able to send? Would a research advisor or volunteer supervisor be more helpful? How many research abstracts would I be able to send?
Also, how is Brown as a premed school, if I don’t get into PLME?
Thanks! I will be visiting soon, but as of now, it is my top choice and I would appreciate any advice on what to focus on in my essays/ what Brown is looking for.
I normally don’t do chances threads, but I’m in an OK mood so I’ll bite.
Look, at first glance you meet just about every bar for selective school acceptance – your grades are stellar, your SATs fabulous, ECs strong and directed. Your application will be strongly considered.
You don’t want to inundate the admissions committee with stuff. Maybe one additional letter of rec is OK. I’m not sure that computer science is the best teacher to use though – they usually like to see recs from the core subjects (science, math, social studies, English, foreign language). Can you provide links to the research abstracts as opposed to sending the actual hard copy? If the abstracts are short - sending 2 would probably be OK.
You’ve done an awful lot, so you may want to use your recommendations to discuss some of your activities. Like getting your bio teacher to discuss your science fair awards, your guidance counselor to talk about another EC.
My main thought is that you need to craft your application so that you come across as someone with personality – that you’re not someone who works 20 hours a day and has no fun, that you truly enjoy what you are doing. Explore why you do the things you do – Brown is looking for people who want to improve their community, who have made a difference in their community. It doesn’t want people who just build their resumes for the sake of having a good resume. It’s also looking for people who are motivated by genuine intellectual curiosity as opposed to grade grubbers. Your alumni interview will be a good opportunity for this too.
None of us strangers on the internet can tell you what your essays should focus on. On paper you come across as extremely qualified. Perhaps focus on something that’s not on paper.
Brown as premed has been discussed A LOT on this forum. Yes, it is a great school for premed.
Quick question about letters of rec- If i submit a research mentor(director of cancer center) letter of rec as a supplemental letter to Brown, will the PLME committee read it?
Yep, the PLME committee has access to your entire application.
update us please! did you end up making it in?
Did you get into Brown PLME, you have a strong profile?
Did you end up getting accepted into PLME?
And, would you recommend applying early decision for a higher chance?
