Young Republicans

I come from an extremely low income family (Less than 15000 a year.) My parents are divorced and I live with my mom. I am a first generation college attendee.

Thanks so much for your help. I know these can be annoying. Please be brutally honest

In all seriousness, you could get in almost any school in the country. You’re rank is outrageous, you have hooks galore, and you have a good breadth of ECs. Props for the Young Republicans; I wish we had a chapter at my school…

I don’t know about all of that Biner_51. His rank is certainly good, along with the low income bracket and first generation bit. Otherwise, his stats aren’t that outrageous. He’s not an URM or from an underrepresented state (unless I misread). His ACT is also pretty low for top colleges. I suggest taking the ACT again and/or SAT. Shoot for 33+ and 2200+. GL!

Hey man, Browns always tough but i do think the high gpa and class rank will mean squat if you can’t get the standardized grades. For a school like Brown it shows a strong disconnect if your grades are astronomically high, yet your scores aren’t. If you can get that ACT up to like a 32, 33 you’ll have a much better chance.

Thanks for your posts guys but as i have said like 18 times i took the act as a sophomore and i did really bad on the math ( i usually do good on math) I am taking it again in two weeks and expect to get at least a 32 hopefully 33+

Your GPA is great and your class rank is obviously outstanding, especially becuase it is such a big class. Your schedule looks rather rigorous, and I think you have good ec’s. Brown is a very tough school to get into, but being a valedictorian helps a lot. SAT’s are your next big project. WORK AS MUCH AS YOU CAN ON YOUR SAT’s, taking practice tests whenever you get the chance to make sure you have as much experience as you can get. If you get the SAT score you want, you’ll get in. Just don’t **** the bed on that test and you’ll be fine.

Good Luck

And thank you very much for your chance on me for Notre Dame. Appreciate all the help

Hey, yeah, I’d agree with the rest of the people. 1 out of 714 is incredible, but you also need to raise your scores in order to increase your chances. Good luck!

While the rank is impressive (as is any potential valedictorian), only a 4.078 GPA? That might raise some questions. Either: A. Your school is so ridiculously hard across the board and rarely weighs GPAs that managing a 4.078 is impressive because nobody else can handle it, or B. Your school’s curriculum is a complete joke and you managed to climb to the top while taking a fairly standard 9-11 courseload. Those are just my opinions. However, number 1 is still number 1 no matter what. Your ECs look pretty good although some leadership will boost them (in other words, get that president spot!) Definitely get that 33 or higher on the ACT, because you have more hooks than a baker has rolls and have a pretty great chance.

Thanks. As for my GPA my district does not offer A+ and AP’s are only weighted .5 so the only way to get above a 4.0 is AP classes. EX: If i took all AP’s and got all A’s I would get a 4.5.

It is a really stupid system that stifles grade points but ill make sure my counselor notes that in my rec. Thanks for your opinion

OK, the explanation for the GPA will help, but that’s just my take on the situation as I’m obviously not aware of the GPA system in every school across the country. :p

so this is the idea for one of my essays. tell me what you think.

From Underprivileged To Ivy League Hopeful: Learning Through Adversity.

I am going to talk about how the my life experiences (very unique) have taught me invaluable life lessons I could not learn in any book and how I will use them to help me succeed at brown and in life.

That idea would be a good idea for the essay, adding to your already well rounded ECs and classes and great class rank to give you a good chance. Also, as it has been stressed before, take as your SAT and ACT to give yourself the best selection of test scores to offer!

Brown and most (all?) of the Ivy League meet 100% demonstrated financial need, and if your family makes under 15k a year that probably means full tuition.

Considering your weird-ass GPA system without the As and A+s…I’m sure that Brown will take that into consideration. With that in mind, I’m sure your GPA would explode up (not that a 4.0 isn’t amazing either way.)

Yeah…basically what sselbor said…Ivies love to give lots of money out…

Best of luck! You deserve it :)

Chrissy

edit: don’t apply early action/decision! I’ve been reading all over that EA/ED rejection rates are skyrocketing…especially in the Ivies…obviously every school is different…but definitely do research on that.
