For Smith Business School, your stats are too low, a 3.84 w is low, plus on top of a 600 CR. However, the overall SAT score is strong. Your APs are also on the short side since it is not the “rigorous” APs like APUSH, APEng, APBio or APCalc.

I think you are in for general admit because of the SAT

well thats a bummer does anyone else think differently? Im just dying to hear some opinions it would be soooo helpful

I actually think he has a decent chance of getting into Smith. With almost a 1400 SAT score (CR+ M) and scores in the 700’s for each of his math test scores, he has a fighting chance, even with the iffy weighted GPA. I’ve heard that UMD takes test scores more into consideration than GPA anyway.

very nice support sir. If it helps at all I figured out my uw gpa and it is a 3.6 I dunno if thats good or bad just putting it out there

Only the admissions office can answer for sure so take others’ opinions with a grain of salt. Best of luck to you!

With a 3.6 UW GPA, I’d say your chances are even better.

k thanks everyone. I got into michigan yesterday( not their business school) but i am still hoping i can get in here

If you got in UMich Ann Arbor you are in UMDCP

this is syrbball153 I did get into michigan ann arbor but i didnt try to get into their business school but at maryland i would like to try to get in the business school so do you think i can get in then?

I think you can get into UMD’s business school. I may be way off base here, but it seems like it’s as difficult to get into the business school at MD as it is to get into UMich’s LSA. So you’re probably fine.

No your not way off base they are somewhat similar i actually think it is harder to get into Michigan but thanks for the advice

I thought entering freshmen were not automatically accepted into the Smith Business school. Heard you apply to Smith as a sophomore. Is this correct? How can the OP be asking for his chances to Smith as an entering freshman? I am confused here.

It’s very possible. Smith school is a Limited Enrollment Program (LEP) that accepts highly qualified applicants in the freshman year. There are many other such programs. I think the OP has a very good shot of acceptance to the Smith program, but as someone else wisely noted we’re not the deciders.

Do you happen to know how competitive is the Smith Business school for entering freshmen? How many apply for how many openings?

The problem is the applicant is from NJ, where many apply to Maryland. The guidance counselors in my son’s High School (also in NJ) are telling kids they need a 4.0 weighted GPA to get into Maryland - and that’s not even for the business program.

Also, UMDCP is also trying to diversify into the national arena, thus, they are taking less from NJ and more from across the country and internationally. This makes NJ much more competitive. 20 yrs ago UMD was the safety school for NJ students, in case they didn’t get into PSU. It is no longer the case.

AS far as Smith, from what I have read with each yr they have been able to increase their stats, thus it is becoming more selective.

I would still say in, not Smith though, nor scholars do to the low gpa and the low CR portion. I say this because UMich AA is more selective than UMDCP, thus, there is something that is probably on your application that is an edge for you.

In my opinion: you’re in.

You’re GPA /is/ low for a Smith admit - 3.8 weighted is the average GPA for all incoming MD students, and since Smith is an LEP (limited enrollment program) and one of the toughest LEPs to get into at MD to boot, the avg. GPA for accepted Smith students would be higher than your own.

HOWEVER - your math SAT score is fantastic, as our your math SAT II scores. Additionally, you have very strong ECs, including FBLA for several years and stock market club for 1. I also don’t think it’s a small feat that you’ve held down jobs throughout high school for quite some time, as well as played sports/remained physically active.

Everything said, though you may be “average” for a MD student overall, you’re strengths are very focused towards a passion for business and if you wrote/will write your essays well, I see you having a very decent shot.

UMich is harder in general to get into than MD, but if you compare getting into Smith vs. Getting into UMich general admit, idk which is harder, they are probably fairly equal…in any case I think you have a really good chance for Smith sooo…take a deep breath, relax, make your application flawless!

thankyou umcp yeah i already submitted my app for early response and my essays are very similar to the ones i wrote for michigan so i think i have a good shot

Your stats are on the lower end for an OOS. However, I think you have a decent shot. It’d help if I had a better idea of your course load and any kind of academic honors/awards, but I think UMD is probably a low reach for you.
