Chances for Cal Poly Computer Science Major

Major: Computer Science, Fall 2019

CSU calculated GPA: 4.29
ACT Score: 30 composite (30 english, 33 math)
EC: roughly 20 hours a week
-sports (captain), church activities
Work: 1-5 a week(not much, but it is related to the major)

I know my test score and work hours are a little low, but I was wondering what my chances of getting in were.

Calculate your MCA score: see post #42. http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/cal-poly-san-luis-obispo/1694769-confused-about-mca-score-p4.html

CS has around a 5-7% acceptance rate so you are correct that your ACT is on the low side. Also Cal Poly SLO uses 9-11th grades in their GPA calculation not just 10-11th like all of the rest of the CSU’s. Plug in your 9th grades into the GPA calculator along with 10-11th to get your SLO GPA.

Based on the MCA calculations from the link I would have around a score of 4535. What is the average MCA score of admitted CS majors?

How did you calculate your GPA? I was under the impression that 4.22 was about the max for SLO weighted and capped.

SLO caps their GPA at 4.2 in the MCA calculation.

@StressedSeniorr: A MCA of 4700+ has been competitive for Engineering/CS majors. A 4535 is on the low side. I suggest you bump up your ACT score to at least with 32+.

Last year, SLO rejected 10,000 4.0 GPA applicants overall so I would say it will be a tough admit. CS is the most competitive at SLO. You might want to consider Software Engineering instead which does have a higher acceptance rate.

@crazycrabman, it all depends on how many hours you’ve taken. The less you have, the more the weighting counts. About the highest you can get at SLO is just over 4.3. That’s especially likely at religious affiliated institutions where religious studies classes don’t count as a-g. As @Gumbymom said though, SLO caps at 4.2 for their algorithm.
