After 9th grade:
Attended CTY Summer Program at JHU, and took Accelerated High School Chemistry
Played in regional golf tournaments, placed in top 3 in a few tournaments.

3rd place Speaker Regional Debate Tournament
6th place Team Regional Debate Tournament
1st Place Skit, Speaking, 3rd Place declaration in Regional Spanish Competition

Recommendations:
One from Physics and AP Physics teacher, one from AP Chem teacher, and one from AP World teacher, all excellent. Counselor should be great as well.

Other stuff:
I am graduating high school early, hence nothing going on in 11th grade. This is why I have to take US History and Gov, and two English classes this year. The reasons for graduating early are various, and both academic and social. Ex: Was prohibited from taking community college classes because of my age this year. My counselor supports it, and she talked it about it in her letter.

Also, I switched schools (and states) from 9th to 10th grade. This, and the graduating early, are why I don't have that many leadership positions. Also caused my low rank, as I lost honors credit for 4 of the classes I took in high school (otherwise would be in top 10). I also missed both science fairs at both schools.

Schools and what I think my chances are:

EA:
Caltech - high reach

MIT - high reach

RD:
JHU (BME) - JHU itself match/low reach. BME is probably reach/high reach

Duke- match/low reach

Rice- match/low reach

Princeton- high reach

Harvard- high reach

UPenn: I am applying to the Jerome Fisher Management and Technology program (super high reach for sure :) ). I do have a genuine interest in business, but it doesn't really show in my ECs. I will probably submit a research paper on business cycle theory I wrote (don't know if it will help...), and the interview should help as well. Backup is SEAS-bioengineering (reach?)

UVa (in state)- low match/safety

Georgia Tech- safety

Thanks in advance, and I'll try to chance you back!

As a fellow Virginian, I’d call UVA more a solid match, it’s definitely not a safety. Kids like you get rejected every year. For a safety, maybe VaTech, JMU, or mary Washington?

Bump (10char)

The main thing that stands out to me as a flaw is that you don’t have that many stellar ECs. You should probably explain how it was due to special circumstances somewhere in your apps or have your counselor write about it. I think that research paper you did is great though!

I agree with you on your ratings, except Caltech seems to be more of a low-mid reach instead of high reach. I’ve heard that Caltech puts more emphasis on scholarship than ECs, and your grades and coarse load seem really good to me.
Also, I think
Duke - low reach
Rice - match

@jeskohanadu: Yeah, I know, but I just thought I’d say it.
@GM2009: Well, I just got deferred at Caltech, so…
I know my EC’s aren’t great, but it was due to switching schools, and then switching grades. I never had any leadership opportunities in clubs, or really long term commitments. Not sure if my counselor mentioned, but I should ask. Thanks!

bump. Anyone else?

you strike me as a genius, but duke loves ECs. they reject harvard admits. they want to see sport-related EC and leadership in those sports.

but overall you seem really smart. great test scores and great gpa. Ivies are all open to you. Dont be afraid to go to your match school! how you do in college determines how you’ll do in life.

chance me back!
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1047897-chance-me-duke-rd-penn-rd-northwestern-rd.html

^ The OP did explain that his rank went down because he lost honors credit for classes taken in his previous high school.

That and the reason you don’t have leadership positions are two things you should get mentioned by your counsellor or that you should mention yourself in the additional info part of your app. Good luck! :)
