Couple of comments -

Columbia, Dartmouth, and Stanford are reaches not because your stats aren't appropriate - they are competitive for all three schools - but because so many kids who apply to these schools have similar stats, and because these schools are so damn selective. Dartmouth is the least selective of the bunch, and it admitted only 17% of its applicants last year. Columbia and Stanford were down around 12%. So, it's not that you shouldn't apply. As I said, you would be competitive. Just don't count on getting in.

If you want an Ivy, Penn is probably your best bet. It's larger than the rest of the Ivies, and accepts about 20% of its applicants. But, though your SATs are well above the Penn median, Penn really likes kids who are in the top 5% of their class. Your class rank just outside the top 5% puts you at a slight disadvantage. Considering both factors, you probably have a bit better than average chance at Penn - 25 to 30%.

Ignore JPoD's comment about BU. He says that for everybody who has BU on their list.

If you're looking for a top-flight US university that's just a bit easier to get into than most of the Ivies, consider Washington University in St. Louis. Great school. Ranked #12 in the US by US News. It's got a nice campus, really nice dorms, a caring faculty and administration, is full of smart, active friendly kids and and has a very active improv scene. It also has a large Jewish population. You'd be a very competitive applicant there.

No he doesnt. Learn to write my name correctly. BU is not a safety school. BU has started getting a bit of Tuft's Syndrome, so now they will reject overqualified candidates who dont show interest. kthxbai.

The number of high stats Asian Canadians applying to top US colleges is just unbelievable. Add that to the high stat American Asians and Asians applying as internationals, and I don't think many can really tell you your chances. The top schools are keeping the number of Asians stable as applications just explode. There's a lot being written about this.

Sorry about that jPoD, but I've seen your comment over and over again, and it simply sounded like a rant by a disgruntled BU student or grad. If in fact BU is rejecting overqualified applicants who don't show interest, I think your postings need to explain that. That last bit about BU getting a bit of Tuft's syndrome added to your posts would clarify the situation nicely. And by the way, you may want to add what you think applicants should do to show interest.

I'm not even a student there (yet). I applied ED. How to show interest: well, apply for applications/information, visit the school, contact the school, etc.
