Chances for Carnegie Mellon

Thanks in advance for your looking at this & providing any information. My son is now in process of applying to 10 colleges. Schools such as TCNJ, Lafayette, Lehigh, Villanova, Brandeis, Wesleyan, and a couple of others, including his reach school, Carnegie Mellon. Carnegie is his #1 choice due to his wanting to major in computers & minor in music. This school is the best fit for him.

Here are his stats. If you need more info to provide a good opinion, please ask. He will be applying for either a computer science major or an Engineering-Computer major, either with a music minor.

His 1st marking period for his senior year he had a 4.1 weighted GPA. All A's & B's. He took AP Calculus BC, AP Physics, AP Computer Science, Accounting Honors, English Honors, Spanish CPA, Musicianship Honors.

His GPA is moving in the right direction (up). His weighted GPA before this marking period was around 3.78. I believe it is now around 3.85 cumulative +/- (waiting on results).

He stuck with the ACT instead of the SAT. He has a 32 composite. 32 English, 34 Math, 31 Reading, 31 Science. He is taking the SAT Subject tests in 2 weeks (Math II/Physics).

Extra Curricular is well stacked. 4 years of marching band, including 2 years as section leader. 4 years of tech crew, being in charge of sound board & involved with lighting. Marched in Disney, 2 Thanksgiving Day parades, and played live with Foster the People in Central Park (they hand picked 7 band members). He also works for my business taking care of the books & paying bills using Quickbooks. He has helped at church providing and serving food to the underpriviliged and working in a food pantry. He is also the local "fix it" kid for his friends when it comes to computers, cell phones, viruses, and even some database management.

I know that CMU, especially the 2 schools within it that he is interested in, is very difficult to get into. He is a white, male, living in the US. We need no need based aid.

Please let me know your educated guesses as to his chances. Based on everything I look at, I think he is borderline on grades, but the extra curricular may push him over a little.

Thank you.

No one has any thoughts??? Did I not provide enough info?

Glenn

I think you provided the stats in an excessively word heavy way, increasing the cognitive investment required to chance you.

Do you know your son’s unweighted GPA?
