Applied to CBS undecided as 1st choice and CLA undecided as 2nd choice.
ACT: 29
GPA: 3.47 UW (Very strong upward trend; 3.80 excluding freshman year) - Lots of IB/AP classes
Decent EC’s:
- One year varsity sport
- Two years student council
- Have held two different jobs
- One year as peer mentor
In State

Iv’e also participated in PLTW for three years and have college credit at the U from two of these classes.
Also have been accepted to the Rochester campus and applied to all other U campuses.
Any input is appreciated.
Forgot to mention that I only have one semester of physics which may or may not be an issue with CBS. I've also been in touch with them for a while as they kept calling me during the summer asking about my interest in the U and things like ACT and EC's.
Hopefully UMN will not count freshman year grades! (not sure how that works but it’s reasonable to hope they’ll put more weight on recent performance). A lot might depend on how you were/are doing in your math and science courses.
If you are currently enrolled in physics, that’s fine - they know your senior year course load from the application and take that into account. The requirement is a year each of physics/bio/chem by the time you start, not by the time you apply. If, however, you took physics earlier on and dropped it, that’s another story.
ACT is at the 25th percentile for admitted but a bit higher for enrolled (where the mid 50% range starts at 28). Again, math and science scores might be important here.
Seems like CLA would be uncontroversial and maybe CBS a bit of a reach. That could be why they haven’t given you a specific decision yet. Also, not sure if they are pursuing a more balanced gender representation at CBS but, because its currently over 60% female, you as a male might have a bit of an advantage, all else equal.
Good luck to you!
Does applying other U campuses hurt or help chances
My guess is neither, I’m an MN resident which is why I applied to all campuses.
Applying to other campuses should not affect your chances. Usually they send out a letter inviting you to apply to the satellite campuses but don’t read anything into that other than that they are making those options available to all applicants. Over the past few years our family has had one slam dunk accept to CSOM w/honors and scholarship, one regular ole’ admission to CLA, and one skin-of-her-teeth to CLA. ALL of them got the letter about applying to satellites.
@JBStillFlying Would you mind sharing ACT/GPA of the “skin-of-her-teeth” admit? I’m finding it pretty hard to gauge where I stand for CLA admission. Thanks!
@JohnStamoskian1 She had a 3.6 uw GPA and 1960 (old) SAT. 5 on the AP Lang and Comp (was her only AP that year) and was taking AP stats, AP Gov, and AP Lit and Comp during senior year. No pre-calc or Calc.
