Chances for Choate

I'm an 8th grader that currently attends a K-8 public school in Florida. I'm applying for the 2011 - 2012 school year. I have yet to take the SSAT or schedule an interview.

I have a strong passion for anything artistic. Our school offers little in terms of extracurricular activities other than sports (due to the economy). Our theatre program was completely dropped this year, so I participate with a theatre organization outside of school that the majority of the time is audition-only.

I have been playing clarinet for 2 years. Both band directors I have had have said I can play amazingly well for someone who has been playing for such a short amount of time. Last year some students, including me, took part in the FBA (Florida Bandmaster's Association) competition. I recieved a superior.

I wished to take art as an elective for 8th grade, but because I am in the school's Pre-AP program, I could not take it for some reason. I no longer take band due to conflicts with my band director's teaching style (we sucked because he didn't teach us...). Would this hurt my chances?

I have gotten straight A's on my report cards since 4th grade.

In 7th grade I participated in the DukeTip Program and took the ACT with no essay. My sceince, reading, and english scores were all in the high 20's, english being my highest with a 29. The math section brought me down (18) because I was taking only Pre-Algebra at the time. My total score was a 26. I recieved state as well as national recognition for having one of the highest scores compared to every other student in the US that took the ACT.

Why only Choate? You should apply to more than one school if you really want to go to BS

I’m also applying to Bolles because it is close to home. My family doesn’t even want me to apply at all, and if I suggested more than one that was as far away as Choate they wouldn’t let me even try. bump

I can tell your heart is leaning toward the North as you like the Giants. Good luck. :D

Haha thanks (:

I’am also applying for choate as a ninth grader next year. I’m an international student. It looks like you have a great chance there. Your grades and classes look great. Make sure you do well on the ssat and the interview. I’m also applying for Andover, exeter, and cushing.

If you have any questions about Choate, feel free to ask me (current Choate student)

Of all the boarding schools up here, I strongly feel that Choate has the strongest music program. As a member of the Choate Chamber Orchestra, I’ve toured overseas with the group every summer since I’ve been there. Our ensembles are extremely high on standards!

@ashim, Do you feel your music experience was a hook for you to get into Choate? I play Viola w/ a ensemble but I didn’t really mention it in my interview or app. I only listed it on my student bio.

I think that you have a pretty good chance at going to Choate but, you have to really show them what you can do. Choate is really competative many are prepared and are smart enough but 80% will not get in so you have to set yourself apart.
