Hey I was just wondering what you guys think my chances are for getting in West Point.

GPA- 3.8 uw 4.4 w
Class Rank 2 or 3 out of 100
SAT- Not too good. 650-m 620-w 590-cr or 1860 total
Athletics- Varsity Cross Country- 1 varsity letter Varsity track- 2 varsity letters Varsity Tennis- 2 varsity letters
Activities- NHS, Math Team, Latin Club cofounder, French Honor Society, Debate Team,
Summer- doing SLS and NASS.

I am having doubts whether I will get in or even get a nomination.

When WP Admissions visited our high school, we were told that participation in IAW (SLS) means that you are on the radar and already meet much of the criteria in which the Academy has an interest. I can only suggest what I've seen on many other threads. Take the SAT again after solid prepping, also take the ACT, keep up your grades, and work hard at SLS. Have fun, too. Good luck!

Thanks for the responses.....I know my sats are on the low end and i am trying to bring them up as much as possible. I am taking them again in may and possibly october. How much emphasis does West Point put on scores? Is a 1240 really that bad?

hmmm well I'd say SATs are probably the most important part of the academic score of your application b/c
"It's the only way the academy can compare every one on a national level"
- my LOA

usually 1300 would make you competative, and 1400 would give you a really good shot... not sure how it works with the new score

Rhode Island is small so you probably won't have that much trouble getting a nomination. but I'm not sure how competative your specific district is

hmmm proportionatly it comes to about a 1260 on the old SATs... at the same time the Math section got a little harder ... souonds about right... I'd assume 2000 will be the magic number just how back in the day 1400 was the magic number

They should continue with this policy. We were told by Admissions that they want each candidate to have the best possible chance to be competitive. Therefore they encourage candidates to retake the test several times.

Well, I never took the SAT...and I didn't do all that great on the ACT (only a 29) and I got in. But...I think it's because I'm from a non-competitive state (West Virginia). There is always hope. If you're meant to be there, I truly think you'll get there.

the mid SAT percentile is about 1150-1350..... so your chances aren't dismal, but you should try to break atleast 1300 to be competative and getting a 1400 should give you confidence

Well my scores place me in the middle of the middle 50 percent of the kids at west point so I don't think they are that bad. However, I am feverishly reading and doing stuff in order to raise that 590 cr score. So do you guys still think that my chances are slim?

michaelburt-yea they prolly will take both. However, a 1970 and 1370 are extremely good scores and you should have no problem getting in which ever you use

Take the SAT/ACT over and over and over again. Get as many books as you can to improve your scores and thus improve your chances. I took the ACT 5 times and imporved each time I took it. Believe me it will pay off in the end.

yea..i was thinking of taking the sat as many times as possible because my scores would pretty much rise by default. However, in applying to other colleges, this might not look so good.

On the subject of chances at westpoint, here are my stats... evaluate away
GPA 4.2 weighted, but not great for my school, top 15%
ACT - 35, haven't taken SAT yet
Athletics - Cross country, tennis - no V letters or special recognition I realize a little light here
EC - 5th in state for debate, all state debate team, captain debate team,
Community service - very involved in congressman's campaign (obviously over now) and very involved (leader) in a charity foundation

I realize I'm light in athletics and it may appear i'm light in EC, but I spend a lot of time on debate - 3-4 hours per day - very commited, ditto for community service, although I haven't been involved in a lot, the one I do participate in I've put a lot of time into

I did get accepted into the summer program in AFA and Westpoint, but I have a feeling that's due to my 35 and not really an indication of my chances of being accepted

My scores actually went down a considerable amount, made me very angry... jq, your class rank gives you an awesome shot, thats a big deal at WP. Are you going to the SLS? If so I might see you there! And is WP your first choice?

sounds to me like you have a pretty even shot at WP. Varsity letters are a big deal and you definately need some leadership activities on that resume...

I'm hoping to get in Session 1 of the West Point SLS, was able to change Nass to Session 3 just in case. Yea WP is my first choice, then the Naval Academy. I think West Point is going to like the class rank as well. My school is pretty competitive as well, the first three or four people in the class go to ivies and the service academies. I was looking at the West Point website and the averages are 648-m and 628-v. All i need to do is raise that CR score a few points and I think I will be all set.
