Chances for Class of 2014!

Rank: 5/ 550 people (Very Competitive)
GPA: 4.7 (out of 4 due to weighting)
Class load: hardest possible no doubt!
ACT: 29 ( I know, I know. This is my WEAKEST point. I am seriously working my butt off this summer. I am studying daily, have resorted to help from a tutor, and hope to raise this score to at least a 31-32 by Sept.)

ECs:

Editor-in-chief of School Paper - first junior to become one in a long time, I am absolutely certain that the newspaper advisor will write me a first class recommendation. I am also the first EIC to serve for two years in a row!

Question: Our school paper won a national award from Columbia University (silver crown) during my time this year as EIC, is something I should mention? This award is not directed to me specifically but more to our entire paper. I think it's appealing as it is an award recognizing the top few papers internationally and is from Columbia itself.

Founder and manager of newspaper website

Awarded Outstanding web-designer by IU

Write for other community papers as well, including our cultural one.

Many essay competition awards; won 1st place in state for a newspaper article I wrote. That same article won 4th place nationally at another competition (which I will not list here for security reasons as you can easily look me up)

History Fair 3rd Place in State/Metro scholarship Winner/ National Qualifier (Alternate)

History Fair Executive Director's award for Superior History

Internship at congressman office summer before junior year

Attended Illini Girls State

Founder/President of an Indian community service council for students (we help out at various community festivals, represent the youth, currently planning a cultural show and a trip abroad to India)
***Currently collaborating to make this an "international student" effort meaning students of all cultures create a joint effort.

State Cultural Pageant winner (first runner up) and miss talent

500+ volunteer service hours through hospital volunteering (the usual lol), tutoring, after school enrichment program helping for younger children, etc. etc.

Math Honor Society President

Founder and manager of MHS website (to submit service hours, updates on events, etc)

National Honor Society

French Honor Society

DECA state winner

I have several other ECs but I feel that these are my main ones and the ones that I am most proud to be involved in! However, as you can see my goal was to essentially divide my interests in three areas: writing/publishing, Politics/History, Indian Culture. Then of course, this is all accompanied by the usual honor societies and community service.

While I am certain I can increase my ACT score by September as I have this asmy biggest commitment for the summer, I would like you to evaluate my chances for this fall!

Recommendations – My counselor especially told me I am her “top junior” and will receive a “stellar” recommendation, and I am certain that the same will apply to my Newspaper Advisor/English teacher who has seen megrow extensively since freshman year. Also, would it be advisable to receive some sort of letter confirming the legitimacy of my internship at the Congressman’s office? I don’t want to give off any sort of impression that it was received through connections and whatnot since it most certainly was not!

Thanks for your advice!

What state are you from? I scanned your post but didn’t see it.

And on a side note, I am a DECA State Winner as well.

And did you take the SAT?

Aside from all those questions, you’ll get in easily.

this must be a mistake…why are you applying to Rutgers???

especially from Illinois. you’re way too overqualified for Rutgers plus you’d be the only person from the midwest in the entire school. over 90% is from NJ. the other 10% are international and a few NY, PA, CT, DE, MD

if i were you i’d be looking at Wisconsin, Michigan, Northwestern, U of Chicago, Washington St. Louis, Cornell, NYU, but you dont belong at Rutgers…

i too think that you are over-qualified and that would normally not catch my attention since a lot of over-qualified people from the tri-state apply to ru which is why i don’t think that you necessarily don’t belong here. but if you’re coming from illinois, why not consider uillinois or any other nw school that rivals ru?

Thanks for the advice. Eh, I guess it isn’t worth coming all the way there if I can get into a similar caliber school around here…but I really want to get out of the midwest!

hmm i see where you’re coming from. my dorm-neighbor from indiana came to ru with the same kind of mindset. and if you want to come all the way to the northeast, maybe you should try looking at the schools oleosmirf was referring to ie cornell nyu and i don’t know, all of the other fantastic schools in this region. because you’re coming all the way over here, and it’d be a shame to come to ru when you have a good chance of getting into some great ne schools. just something to think about.

haha yeah thanks…funny that you mention cornell…i am considering applying ED there but I obvs need a list of other schools to just in case.

Thanks for the reply guys! BTW, what is the financial aid situation like at RU? Merit aid?

merit aid used to be based on a rigid matrix of sat scores and class rank, but they’re now apparently taking other things into account ie rigor of courseload, i don’t really know what else. and they do have need-based aid as well. but i think you’d easily qualify for the merit aid.

and i love cornell! the campus is so pretty! my bf goes there, and i get so jealous every time i visit. and there’s such a good social atmosphere and even though the student body there is so motivated and intellectual, they’re also really chill. the workload is rough, though, but i think you could handle it. definitely apply, i’d say!

what kind of other schools are you looking into, if you don’t mind my asking? like what are you looking for in a school? perhaps i could give you some suggestions, if you’d like.

Thanks naoise! Yeah im definitely considering cornell…im going to visit in a couple weeks so i want to check out a few things there esp like location and types of people who go there so i know i’ll fit in! I hope i like it there!

Thanks for offering your help! THis is my current college list -

Duke University
UPenn
New York University (another top choice…i know how it is a polar opposite of cornell, but I like NYU for reasons other than I like cornell. I am going to visit the two so I’ll be able to have a stronger opinion after i come back)
Vanderbilt University
Emory University
Brown University
Washington University St. Louis
Northwestern University
Tufts University
George Washington University
University of Michigan (Early Action)
University of Illinois (Early Action)
Case Western Reserve University (Early Action)

i am looking at business/econ programs…please, please, please make some suggestions! My thread in “what are my chances” is a failure…no one answers in there! I guess I am basically worried about not having enough safety schools and somehow I need to shorten this list by like 2-3 schools. I am aiming to apply to 12-13 schools max with as many as I can do EA as possible.

actually it might be better if I send you a pm lol… since this is the rutgers board afterall…lol. So, i’ll just send you this same info in a PM and others who would like to make suggestions can certainly do so!

THanks CC!

btw I also went to IU for my freshman year and there is no comparison. IU is much more well run than Rutgers. that star day I had to go to was absolutely ridiculous. took 3 hours to sign up for classes and they wouldnt let me meet with an advisor beforehand so I actually knew what courses I were taking.

at IU I sat with an advisor for a good 30 min and we went over what courses I should take and everything. Rutgers just doesnt do things well.

the one problem with Cornell is that you are in the middle of nowhere. Ithaca is a nice small college town but it gets very old after a while and Cornell has such a high suicide rate (like triple the next school).

although Cornell is quasi-public so its rather cheap…

either way Rutgers is nowhere near as good as any of the schools you have on your list. i’m actually quite suprised you’ve head of us over there…

cornell’s high suicide rate is merely a myth: “Cornell had eight students take their own lives in the past ten years. With about 19,000 students on campus, Cornell has a suicide rate of about 4.3 per 100,000 student years for that time period, far below both MIT and national rates.” (source: [The Tech - Volume 120, Issue 6](http://tech.mit.edu/V120/N6/) couldn’t get a good working link but its the article about suicide) you can also read more here: [Bucking Privacy Concerns, Cornell Acts as Watchdog - WSJ.com](http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB119881134406054777.html?mod=blog) and here: [Suicide Rates at Cornell Not As High As Believed | The Cornell Daily Sun](http://cornellsun.com/node/2072)

it is in the middle of nowhere, though, i must say.
and rutgers has some major problems, i also must say.
