Chances for CMU or UIUC?

Hey guys this is my first post, and I am freaking out right now. I am currently a student at community college in Maryland, and am looking to transfer to a couple schools, but the two I want to ask about are Carnegie Mellon and University of Illinois at Urbana Champaigne.

I am on track for engineering ( I am currently in an intro to engineering class), and am probably going to transfer as a Mechanical Engineer. My highschool GPA was completely horrific. It was a 2.0. I suffered serious clinical depression and was hospitalized multiple times throughout, but regardless I know that is not enough to make up for such a terrible GPA.

It seems as of now my first semester in college GPA will be around a 3.1. I know it's a longshot but I have interned at Stanford twice (medical lab) and my mom went to CMU so I am an Alumini. I really think if I can properly convey my true self (intelligence, what not) in my essay I can hopefully get in.

What do you guys think? I really think if I got a chance I would do great things, but I have been hindered pretty dramatically by my illnesses (which have since been taken care of).

Thanks alot guys I would really appreciate the feedback.

You need to have a 3.8 or better at community college to have a reasonable chance to get in mechanical engineering at UIUC. When we visited a few months ago, my friend was told she had “virtually no chance” with a 3.2 GPA. Even as an Illinois resident, its very difficult to transfer into Mechanical Engineering.

Your second chance is community college. I had a 2.0 in high school and a 4.0 in community college (pre-engineering). I was accepted and now I’m enrolled at UIUC, starting in January, after only 3 semesters at a community college.

Sorry man… you need to have a much higher GPA like the one above me said… a minimum 3.8 !
