Hey everyone! I've been wondering about my chances of getting admitted to CMU.

Some background information on me: I was born and spent my childhood in Romania, then my family moved to Canada and the we moved again to Pittsburgh 4 years ago. I'm currently a junior in high school, with a current GPA of 3.4 (this year's grades have not been finalized yet, so that's only Freshman and Sophomore year) with some pretty rigorous course work. I've taken all Honors classes and a few IB classes so far and next year I plan to take 4 AP classes: AP Calculus, AP Computer Science, AP Physics and AP English, as well as continuing my elective study in Engineering. I hope to have a 3.5 by the end of this year. I took the SAT in December and placed a 730 in Critical Reading, 720 in Math, and 650 in Writing (only because my essay received a lower score than I thought). I recently took the SAT again with a focus on improving my combined score of 2100 (especially in Writing) and hope to get somewhere around a 2200.

I want to apply to CMU's SCS and I was wondering what the community here thinks my chances are. I really would like to hear your opinions!

GPA seems a little on the low end, but what the hell do I know. LOL I wanna go to CMU SCS as well but my course rigor sucks I have taken many Honors but NO AP, but everything else on my app is prodigious. People on CC took my dream and threw it onto the ground and then stomped on it and spit on it. Remains to be seen if I am accepted for the class of 2016.

I know my GPA is on the lower end for CMU, but I think I have other factors that make me an appealing choice for SCS. Plus that only 9th and 10th grade. I hope to end with around a 3.5 for this year

If you have some CS related ECs, you are a low match for SCS. Your GPA -is- low, but your SAT is impressive enough to be in a green zone. If you bump it up to 2200 even better.

Well I did CMU Andrew’s Leap program in the summer as a student there and I’ve also volunteered there as a Teacher’s Assistant. I’ve done PJAS (Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science) for a few years, and some Engineering Fairs. I volunteer at my school and church. Some other programs I’ve done are NYLSC (National Young Leaders State Conference) and LeadAmerica. I don’t play a lot of sports, except for Rec Soccer. I think that’s about it.

EDIT: I haven’t taken the SATII yet. I will take that in March and possibly the ACT in April.

Too early to tell (especially extracurricular-wise, although nothing really stands out there, unless you’d like to elaborate on the Engineering Fair front) but right now your stats are on the low end for SCS.

Junior year grades will be critical. If you get largely A’s your junior year you’ll be more competitive (and upward trends can make up for mediocre early grades); right now your GPA is fairly low for their admitted student profile.

SCS won’t really look at the writing section of the SAT (at least that’s what I was told by some admission people). I would concentrate on doing well on your junior year grades and doing well on your SATII’s (especially math II and whichever science you take)
