Do I have a chance for SCS or CIT (Computer Engineering)? I am so worried about my GPA.

Hey,

I actually have the same problem as you-I have a pretty low GPA as well (I got Cs both semesters of BC Calculus sophomore year) but I’m taking the most rigorous classes. My extra curriculars definitely took up most of my time, so I just recommend you to write a mind blowing essay from your heart and really convey the message that you want to go to CMU. I think that’s the best thing you can do right now; I don’t know about CMU but some colleges allow you to write an additional essay explaining your grades, so you might be able to talk about why your GPA is so low as well as back up your arguments with your AP scores (which are very impressive, I must add) and your top 10% ranking. With that said, I believe you have a pretty good chance of getting in. :)

You’ve got good SAT scores. TOEFL is kinda low but I doubt it matters much. A lot of APs have been taken which is a very good sign that you’re smart. Doesn’t look like you’ve taken any Physics courses and that’s really weird considering you wanna go to CIT/SCS. My suggestion is to take Physics courses in the senior year…
Your ECs look good. Submit that research paper- it’ll increase your chances of admission.
GPA is really low by CMU standards but since they look at the whole picture I think you stand a chance of getting in.

I had a chance to study college physics at college during my middle school at my country.
So, I took both AP Physics C tests at my freshman year and scored 4 and 5. My school does not allow me to take any physics course that school offer because I already get the score of the hardest AP courses… I also scored 800 on SAT II Physics. If I explain this situation to colleges, will they understand my situation? Thanks for replying.

We have the exact same GPA (w and uw), basically the same SAT and same math track (this looks really good, trust me) and number of APs. I went to a renowned private high school too. They don’t look at AP scores in admitting you but you can use them. You beat me by a longshot on the SAT IIs. The low GPA will be offset by all the hard classes and school difficulty. I got into CIT (didn’t apply for SCS) but I’d say you’re set.
