Chances for CoE

Hi, I'm making this chance thread just to get a general idea my admission chances. I plan on applying to the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. I am in-state.

I am a Palestinian born in the West Bank and have lived in the USA for 15 years and I am a US citizen. I visit the West Bank every two years or so and I can speak another language besides English. Technically I'm not an URM because middle-eastern is considered white.

I am a rising senior in highschool and have a 3.9 GPA unweighted. I go to a small school and am ranked 3 out of 103 kids in my class. Our school doesn't weigh GPA's and only offers two or three "advanced classes" which I took. I am taking the hardest classes next year which include Calculus, Physics, and English 121 and I'm also dual enrolled at the local community college. I got a 27 on my ACT and I plan on retaking it in September. My individual scores were 30 R 29 S 28 E 21 M. I have been studying math, so I should have a higher score this time.

I've been on the Varsity Track team for three years. This is my second year in the National Honor Society where I have about 45+ volunteer hours (low, I know), I'm a Science Olympiad competitor where I took place in the Helicopter, and Design events, and I took sixth in state for a project I built in wood shop class. I attended Boys State where I served as Prosecuting Attorney and won all of my cases. What are my chances?

Your GPA is great, but your ACT, specifically the math section might hurt you the most. It is one of the most important factors to admission at the college of engineering. I would say that you are a match being that you are instate, but try and raise the ACT somewhat (specifically the math section). If you can get it up to a 28 - 30, then I think you have a good shot at getting into Michigan.

the CoE SPECIFICALLY looks at your math score as well as your composite so i don’t see you getting into CoE with a score of 21 on the math section. Most of the engineering people that i know got like 33+ on the math section

mjmay7 is correct – your math score is going to lead to a rejection from CoE. If you can raise specifically your math subscore I think you have a great shot.

I recommend talking to your high school counselor and seeing what stats kids from your school have who get into umich. Umich is pretty good about recognizing the rigor of various in-state high schools.
