Chances for CoE

White Male Applying for CoE at Cornell University

SAT:
800M, 600s CR/W
750 MI, 740 MII, 700 Physics
3.7ish GPA UW

AP Scores: 4s on APs

Eagle Scout, Captain of Chess Team, Varsity Wrestling 9-12, Varsity Tennis 11-12, Ping Pong Club top seed, bronze medalist in Russian essay contest

Please give me an honest opinion of my chances at CoE. I am interested in Biomedical Engineering.

chances plz anyone....? BUMP!

without more information i would say low chance

what information do you need? top 20 percentile with a 92 UW GPA...anything else? why did u say i had a low chance? not complaining, just curious....

how many and what APs? what wwas your SAT score breakdown for the other two sections?

Physics B (3) Computer Science A (4)-Currently taking AP Physics C, BC Calculus, Economics Honors...

590/800/600 cr/m/w for SAT and major is Biological/Environmental Engineering

What happened to "AP Scores: 4s on APs" I see a 3 and a 4 on two of the easiest AP exams out there. Also hiding your scores on a college forum where you are asking what your chances are makes me think you are hiding more.

and 590 and 600 isn't exactly "600s CR/W"

you don't have much of a chance.

anyone else want to help me out...? CHANCES plz? thx everyone!

i don't think your ECs support your major enough.
imo, without a hook your chance is average at best. keep up hope, it could happen.

JasonSK, i do not admire posters like you. If you don't have anything positive or helpful to say, please don't post. and a 590/600 is basically about the same thing, you don't need to argue about petty little things.

and rw9700, i think your chances are at most average, especially to CoE, which is quite competitive compared to other schools. However, your 800 in M is impressive. Since the deadline has passed, I would suggest you write cornell a letter and apply to CALS, which is easier to get into, and apply to Biological Sciences (and you can double major later if you want). You might need to write another essay, but I think its well-worth it. Good Luck :D

I dont need approval from someone named "cooldude" who isn't in college yet. i was being helpful by giving him the honest truth, if people with opinions hurt your feelings i suggest you avoid internet message boards all together and reconsider your close minded views before you get to college.

heh, I don't think admissions for engineering is that competitive, hell I got in. :)

If you already applied, then there's no point in talking about chances, just sit back and relax. I would say it's harder to get into the other schools, based on admissions percentages. His CR and verbal are pretty low, and so are his SATIIs, especially for engineering. I've found that most of the guys have near 800s for math and science SATIIs. Engineering focuses highly on your test scores and gpa, but depending on what classes you took and you weighted gpa, your gpa might be weighed differently. I would definitely agree with Jason in saying that your chances are slim, but I wouldn't be surprised if you do get in since college admissions is essentially a crapshoot, but definitely think about whatever lower tier schools you applied to as more realistic chances.

I wasn't approving you jason, in fact i was incensed by your comments. and your ridiculous comments such as "600/590 are not the same!!!" are pretty offending to the IMO. i might not be in college yet, but i do believe i have sufficient knowledge to assess other's people's chances. and i admire your honest truth, but not they way you present it. next time you can be a little more polite and understanding and not demoralizing the IMO.

peace

so CALS would be easier to get into than CoE?

BUMP...anyone plz???

The point is not to apply to a school that would be "easier" to get into. You want to apply to the school you are most interested in, because it will definitely show in your essays, extra curriculars, etc.

"and your ridiculous comments such as "600/590 are not the same!!!" are pretty offending to the IMO"

I'm not taking one side or the other here, but I'd just like to say that 600 and 590 are not the same. Schools would be more likely to accept someone with a 600 over a 590 not only because it is a higher number, but because 600 would put you in a different range in terms of the college rankings. We've all seen in guidebooks and stats with "the percentage of students below 600" and its usually less than 10%. Letting in more students below the 600 mark can hurt the school's ranking, and that's why the difference between a 590 and a 600 is of greater significance than another 10 point differences, say between a 660 and a 670.

To the topic starter: Cornell is a reach, but it's always better to take the risk than be left to wonder "what might have been" if you had filled out the application.

wait,
are you an international student whose native language is not English? if so, then 590/600 may be acceptable. but if not, then relatively low chance.
