Chances for College of Engineering ED?

wow really? about the engineering having a high acceptance rate? Will that help even more if I apply early decision there?

And also a question to the forum: Is there an interview portion even for early decision applicants?

Dumb question?

Yes, Yes, Yes, No, Yes (in order)

wait, so there isn’t an interview if you apply early decision? sorry im a bit confused

Correct, there is no interview for the College of Engineering, regardless of whether you apply ED or RD.

Alright thank you for the help guys. Could I ask if you could chance my chances for early decision into Cornell school of engineering?

I’m a junior in high school trying to get into Cornell and I would just like to know your opinion of my chances. I am thinking of applying EARLY DECISION.

Standardized testing:
SAT: 2200
Math: 760
Reading: 740
Writing: 700
SAT Subject Tests: (Probably Retaking)
Math II: 700
Chemistry: 760

Academics:
A’s range all the time. Nothing Below a 95. During my Junior Year I am enrolled in 4 AP classes:
Calculus BC
US History
English
Chemistry

I am easily in the top 10 of my grade. Next Year I will be taking 6 more AP classes.

Extra Cirriculars:
Math Team (going to be all 4 years next year): Varsity Captain
Indoor Track (going to be all 4 years next year): Varsity Captain
Outdoor Track (going to be all 4 years next year): Varsity Captain
Student Government/Student Council (going to be all 4 years next year): Treasurer
Member of National Honors Society and Spanish Society
I also have over 250 hours of community service, most from mentoring little children and dong stuff around my school.

I also did some international stuff like raise money for this mosque back in my home country and I also started an organization there to keep up my project in my abscence (this was done over a summer). I also helped a hospital in this country and started a fundraiser program for that too.

Also I am from Sri Lanka so I think the minority thing will help.

I don’t know if it helps but I also am multilingual and play guitar.

I also did a few clubs throughout the years but the ones above are my main ones that I stuck with all four years.

Let me know my chances of getting in. Thanks. It is greatly appreciated.

Trackstar: You have to apply to a specific school within Cornell. If you apply ED, you can still apply to other schools. But if you are accepted, then you are required to enroll at Cornell and withdraw all other applications (unless the financial aid isn’t enough… then you might be able to get out of it).

The admissions office and the financial aid office are not linked in any way. You won’t be rejected because you can’t afford to pay tuition. Also, if you are accepted ED, you will receive a letter from the office of financial aid a few days later. I applied ED for 2010 and was accepted, so this info is up to date. Applying ED was great for me. I already thought I was a strong candidate, but applying ED and walking into my interview enthusiastically wearing a Cornell t-shirt helped a lot.

woops sorry, i didn’t see there was a secone page of posts. well there’s my input anyway =)

Thank you intelletual. Being a cornellite could you give me my chances of getting into the college of engineering with these statistics? Thank you. And do you know, by chance, why you had an interview but the college of engineering doesn’t have an interview?

@bri1a4n and @ TrackStar2011,

Both of you have a very good chance getting into Cornell CoE. You have great credentials. Bolster it with great essays and passion for Cornell CoE. I suggest go through their website and figure out if something intrigues you e.g. Nanobiotechnology, Tissue Engineering, Computer Graphics or whatever. Complete all optional essays.

@bri1a4n, leverage your MIS experience into your passion for engineering/computer science. If it was a paid experience then tell them that.

@Trackstar2011: Your minority thing will go against you. As you are part of South East Asian block, they are considered Over Represented Minority. Only Under Represented Minorities benefit from this aspect. Do not use it in your essays. Instead talk about your travels to Sri Lanka and how you can use technology to improve living standards there. Cornell is big into such technologies. Your athletics should help you a great deal.

Overall, both of you are great candidates. Just let the passion flow through in your essays and absorb content from departmental website and also individual professor/lab web sites and weave that into your appropriate passion and interest.

Thanks a lot for the advice. Do you have any other helpful hints about the admission process? Or do you have any other essay topics that you believe have worked well for you? Or generally any other thoughts? All of these have been very helpful guys, thanks a lot.
