what major in CHE are you looking for? why is CHE right for you? what are your passions/ambitions/career goals

cornell is all about passion and channeling it into academic/career goals. you will have to show why cornell is perfect for you. it’s not just about sats/gpa.

also, w/out a gpa it’s hard to tell. “pretty good transcript” could go a lot of different ways. are you an A student? B student? mix? how do you know you are in the top 5%?

your ec are good but they are all over the place. do you have any ecs that are directly related to your passion/career goals?

thanks hyperlite.

i would like to major in Human Biology, Health and Society. CHE is right for me because i wish i could help people in pain. i would like to be a doctor and it is only through the CHE that i can obtain a solid foundation to enter the medical school.

I am an A student and for the ecs they are the only ones i have at the moment. i would appreciate it if you could tell me some ecs that are more directly related to my dream of becoming a doctor so that i can get involved in them.

Thanks

you have a great chance because you are from ghana. good luck!
i recommend you take the SAT I again because you did better on Math II than Math I… so you can improve a lot!

Hum Ec is probably not the school to apply to med schools from. Most students interested in med school either apply from Arts and Sciences or NY residents thru the Agriculture school with a major in Bio. Hum Ec is likely to produce more food science majors, and social workers than doctors, at least when I was there, although it has the easiest reputation for getting in. You can get in and always try to transfer to another Cornell college once you are there.

@redbluegoldgreen: i doubt he would be able to transfer to another college; that is really rare and def. looked down upon. cornell admits based on your fit to the particular school and major.

@richardaddo: i was asking you about your passions/career goals b/c cornell looks for your essays to demonstrate who you are, what you want, and how cornell can specifically help you get reach those goals.

just saying “cornell will help you get to med school” is too vague. this statement could be copy and pasted with any college’s name. for ex: helping ppl in pain - why, where did this passion come from? how do you know you are committed to this goal? how does the Human Biology, Health and Society fit into your life? how did you find and choose this major? these are just the kinds of questions cornell is looking for you to answer in your application. they want to know what specific major and why their curriculum/resources/environment will help you achieve your goals. you will prob want to do extensive research on both the college and the major.

i agree that most of the pre-med ppl ive met are not in human ecology, most are in CALS and CAS. although i have no idea why. i dont know if the programs in those schools are more tailored for med school apps or what.

the fact that you are an international will help you during the admissions process but im not sure how much. keep in mind there is very limited aid for international students. not sure if this is even an issue for you.

thanks redbluegoldgreen and hyperlite.

i have now decided to apply to the the College of Arts and Sciences. I have visited the CAS page and i have come to realize that it’s better than the College of Human Ecology when it comes to pre-med. i will go for the Biological Science Major.

About the financial aid i read from the cornell website:
In order to support the enrollment of international students from diverse backgrounds, Cornell University has modified its financial aid program for undergraduate international students.
Beginning in Fall 2010, financial aid funding that had been limited for Canadian and Mexican undergraduate students will be used for all international students. Currently, Cornell spends about $5.5 million dollars on financial aid for Canadian and Mexican undergraduate students and about $2 million dollars on financial aid for all other international undergraduate students. When the new policy is implemented, all international undergraduate students will be eligible for financial aid funding that had previously been allocated specifically for Canadian and Mexican students and other international students. This new policy will allow Cornell to enroll undergraduate international students from a broader range of countries, and will apply to all new international undergraduate students beginning in Fall 2010. Canadian and Mexican students who matriculated at Cornell prior to Fall 2010 will continue to receive financial aid under the policy that was in effect at the time of matriculation.

I guess if i am admitted i will receive a good financial aid package.

Thanks hyperlite for the info you gave me on the kind of questions cornell would like me to answer in my application. i will do more research on the website to know why cornell’s resources and environment will help me achieve my goals.

hey Richard…am also from Ghana but currently in the States…i heard its more difficult to get into CAS…why not stick to CHE…Afterall…you’ll get the needed coursework for med school…it all depends on you…

Hey Shadglore,

thanks for the comment. I got into CHE, but I’m at Dartmouth now. Are you still in high school.

No.Richard.I actually completed Opoku Ware School this year and currently a freshman at an HBCU here…I sent you a PM.did you get it?..I did quite well too but had no guidance on the apps.(SAT 1-2030 WASSCE-6A’s)…I am cuurently working my way out on a transfer.

…A quick one…You know Ghanaian high schools do not rank nor use GPA system. What do i write on the commonapp??What did you do?I was a generally an A student in high school with 2Bs in my entire high school career.A’s throughout except those two B’s…

I’ve replied to your pm. I didn’t state any GPA on my application since we didn’t have gpas at my school.
