I am currently a junior at a public high school that is consistently ranked as one of the most difficult public schools in the country, and outperforms charters and magnets despite being a traditional public school. I transferred to this school in October of 2012. Prior to this, I lived in a different town. For all of high school, I have been a high-achieving student. I got all A's and several B's my sophomore year, and have taken a minimum of 3 Honors/AP courses all years of high school. In addition to academics, I have served on the newspaper editorial board for a year and a half, and will continue another position as a senior. I will also serve on my school's Model UN and JSA boards, despite only being at the school for less than a year, and plan to attain a JSA state cabinet position. I am also on the Mock Trial team and I'm an active member of the Jewish Student Union. This past year, I have done extremely well in all of my courses (3 A's, 2 B's and 1 C. first semester, 4 A's, 1 B, and 1 D second semester. 3 AP courses- Language, Psychology, US History), except for Pre-Calc. My school's math and science departments have a reputation for being notoriously difficult, and CP courses are considered honors-level difficulty at other schools in the district, and I had the hardest teacher in the math department. I received a C first semester and a D second semester in Pre-Calc. I plan to take an online course to replace the D, and I'm expecting to easily complete the course with an A, or B at the minimum.
The D will not calculate into my GPA, which is around a 3.8 weighted. My SAT score is projected at 2200 minimum.
My current top 4 schools are Emory, Boston University, GW, and Tulane. Will still having that D on my transcripts seriously harm my chances of being accepted into one of those college? I plan to use the D as one of my college essay topics.

Anyone want to help me? I’m desperate.

First off, calm down. One grade will never ruin chances, you are more then the sum of your statistics. Be careful if you use it as an admission topic, you don’t want to come across as complaining. Using “I got a bad grade” as an example of failure is also really cliched. I’d rethink that choice. Schools get a profile of your school, which will show that it’s really difficult. If it won’t factor into your GPA, It’s not going to be an issue anywhere but HYPSM, which isn’t where you’re targeting.

I don’t know much else about you, but Emory, Boston University, GW, and Tulane all seem like perfectly reasonable target schools, even verging on safety. Good luck!
