I am planning to apply ED. I am white, male and from Maine. I'm not a legacy. And sadly, I'm not quite fast enough to be recruited for running. I will be undeclared, but I will send in the music supplement.

Bumpin’…

" I am white, male and from Maine. I’m not a legacy. And sadly, I’m not quite fast enough to be recruited for running."

Columbia ED: Reach
Other “top 10” schools: Reach

Not very many students come from Maine…Another possible hook is the fact I play viola. There aren’t many of us!..feel free to reconsider and provide any feedback as to improving the app

They are reach schools unless you have hooks.

Admit rate below 10% => Automatic reach

I’m also interested in Georgetown, Haverford, McGill, and Bowdoin and I’d appreciate chances for those schools. But thanks for the reality check…

“Georgetown, Haverford, McGill, and Bowdoin”: Good to very good chances

See, I guess what I don’t understand is how Columbia is an automatic reach with 9% acceptance but Bowdoin is “good to very good chances” with a 13% acceptance…

Stop looking at the acceptance rate and look at the stats. Most people who got into schools like columbia had 4.0s and SATs around what you have. I wouldn’t put you as a shoo-in for a school like Bowdoin either - they’re similarly selective in terms of stats.

Bottom line is that you’re very qualified but those top 10 schools (ivies, NESCACs) are reaches for just about everyone.

EDIT: Bowdoin may be less of a reach to us mainers - evidently they try to take some 10% of Maine apps.

Also, do you recommend I take subject tests? I’ve already done ACT and SAT I

Yeah, take subject tests. A lot of schools require them.

Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=1528653

Subject tests are a good idea. It provides colleges more information about you and your academic rigor/interest. You have good scores and a good rank. What is your intended major? I would try to use one of your ECs to really promote your interested major in a college essay.
If everything else goes well, you have a very good chance at being a competitive applicant.
I recommend for you to use Cappex. I don’t know how accurate they are, but it’s given me a good idea of which colleges I should and should not apply to, and my chances.

Good luck!

Awesome EC! Your GPA and SAt/ACT are fantastic. I didnt see any leadership positions in your EC? try to find one to show college admissions committees. I would say you have a low reach for Columbia (virtually no one has a match for Ivy Leagues). Your resume is pretty darn impressive

chance back!?
