Chances for Columbia and UPenn(w/ ED?)

Hey guys, I had been planning on applying in-state to a school like William and Mary or UVA but started to think about some of the Ivy League schools and wanted to know how my chances were.

SAT I (breakdown): 800CR/630M = 1430, will retake for Math 700+
ACT: n/a
SAT II: haven't taken yet, expecting 750+ on USH and Lit

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
Weighted GPA: 4.68

I'm in a specialized high school program for "Leadership, Government, and Global Economics"

Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 16/372

AP (place score in parenthesis): Sophmore: Euro-5, Junior: US-5, Senior: Gov, Latin, Micro/Macro Econ, English, Environmental (Expecting 5s, maybe a 4, in all)

Senior Year Course Load: Heavy

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Latin Summa Cum laude (4x)

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
History Club (4 years)
Beta Club (2 years)
NHS (2 years)
Latin National Honor Society (2 years)
Latin Club (4 years)
MUN (4 years) -awards like best delegate everytime
Academic Team (Co-Captain) 3 years, 5th in state

Volunteer/Community service:
Summer Internship at Civil War Battlefield/Museum (200 hours)
Volunteer at nursing home (150 hours)

Essays:Excellent (no, really, I'm actually a very good writer)
Teacher Recommendation: probably excellent, I havent seen them
Counselor Rec: generic
Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
Intended major?: History/English
School Type:Large, semi-competitive public
Ethnicity: WASP Gender: M
Income Bracket:100,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): first gen

I say you have a good chance. You already are taking the SAT over again, so that’s good. Out of curiosity, what is a WASP? I’ve heard that so many times, but I never asked.

Also, what is Latin Summa Cum Laude?

WASP is White Anglo Saxon Protestant. It’s like stereotypical middle-class white guy. Latin Summa Cum Laude is the top award for the National Latin Exam (Kind of like an AP taken every year by Latin students)

Lower ivies would be worth a shot if you can bring math into the 700s.

With Upenns 30% admission at ED, you probably have a good chance. Columbia is a low reach. You should apply for Cornell at ED, and you might have a higher chance of getting in at one of the Ivys.

Just take note that for ED sometimes not enough financial aid is not a valid reason to cancel your contract with that college.

low reaches for both. Why is your SAT out of 1600?

^ some colleges only look at your CR and M score.

I’d say they’re both still reaches, even if you get that math score up. You probably have a better chance ED at Penn than Columbia, but don’t make that a reason to apply there instead of the other. Apply to your favorite ED, and the rest RD. And don’t anticipate an acceptance; there are a million reasons why an admissions officer might not like you. (Your ECs look to be a little weak, because almost every applicant has those same or similar ECs.)

UVA does seem like a great match/low reach, though, especially if you want to continue on a similar path to what you studied in high school. I would suggest it above the Ivies even if you are accepted by all three. Georgetown would work as well for that path.

Does the fact that he’s a first generation applicant give him enough of a hook to boost his chances? I never quite got an idea how much of a hook first generation is

hey JD ;). Finally succumbed to the urge to do one of these, huh?

The only thing I can’t figure out is, why austro43? Like Austro-hungary or something?

Anyway- since you are instate for UVA and W+M, I say match.

Columbia and Penn? I’ll help you get that math score up. :)

(You know I’ll make you, eventually, right?)
