Chances for Columbia GS

Well, my story is I am non-traditional student from New York and I am 21 years old. I took one and a half year break before I attend college because my father had left the family when I was sixteen and I cannot bear to see my mother take care of a family of four, so I work full-time fore that duration until my two sister was able to provide some assistance for the family. I was at a lost of direction so I apply to CUNY school and jump at the first few selections, if I will have known better I will have chosen a four year college instead but I had selected BMCC because of the commute and its location, however back then I was terribly afraid of taking loans to pay for education which I am regretting now. If I had known better I will had apply to university or try my luck on higher standard of university/colleges. Unfortunately I did not and I had to stand by my decision.

I am about to graduate from a BMCC community college with a associate degree majoring in business administration and I have been researching on options that are available. I will be graduating with at least a 3.8 gpa and I will be on the dean's list for 2 consecutive year along with being in a Phi Theta Kappa honor society. I worked part time throughout my two year in BMCC, so i was not able to volunteer or affiliated myself with any club. However, when I was in high school I was not the best student nor was my SAT scores (1250 as I remember). But on the positive side is that I am a change person I am value higher education. My question is if I attain a AA degree will university and colleges still care about the SAT or require it to be sent there or high school diploma?

I am looking into Columbia GS for non traditional students and I am really interested in Columbia GS but I am afraid my credential is not strong enough (especially my SAT score and High school transcript), or NYU if possible but I am really afraid that my SAT score will be judge harshly and it will end up ruining my chances. If those school are too selective, how about university of Chicago which I heard was a great business school?

I am quite interested in Haas, so University of California Berkeley is also a option. Or other option that are applicable and with my credential to be a contender. To be honest, I want to attend a good business university/college and I will greatly accept any recommendation. I appreciate any advice. If you need anymore information I will be glad to include it.

If my chances to attend these colleges is out of my league how about fordham university or Villanova University?

Hi- I’m a GS student. You are a viable candidate (3.8 is very good!) but here are a few things to think about:

1) I would retake the SAT or take the GSAE and get a new score.
2) Make sure your essay is compelling and make sure it not only highlights your growth as a result of taking time off from school and why Columbia is the perfect next step for you. A simple sad family story is not enough.
3) Get two good recommendations from professors who remember your hard work.
4) If you do get in, many of your transferrable coursework will give you credit towards graduation but will not cover major requirements or core requirements. Columbia requires a good amount of coursework to be completed there to maintain their rigorous standards, so you might be looking at an extra year of school before graduation. Find out what can be transferred by calling the school. They are very helpful. If your JC offers something that’s transferrable toward your major, I recommend taking it first to save some SERIOUS dollars. Columbia is pricy as hell.

Thank you very much for your reply and as a person with experience with transferring to GS, I really appreciate your advice.

Can you also tell me what is the meaning of “JC”? In addition to focusing on the reason why Columbia GS is a good choice for me, should I also focus on some failures to highlight my motivation?
