<p>I'm a sophomore now, but just wondering ouo if these schools are like... reasonable.</p>

<p>I'm a first generation Chinese american going to an independent college preparatory school in the "forgotten" borough of NYC. My school only allows 3 APs per year and only starting Junior year, so I haven't taken any of those yet.</p>

<p>Prospective Majors: Linguistics/East Asian Languages + Biology (premed)</p>

<p>SAT Scores: 2270 (Did pretty badly on vocab, but I can try to fix that before the next time I take the SAT)
Unweighted GPA: 3.9ish
Class Ranking: My school doesn't release them, but I'm probably top 5% (very small classes, about 40 a grade)</p>

<p>SAT IIs:
Haven't taken any yet, but I plan on taking Math II, French, Latin, Spanish, US History, </p>

<p>Interests:
Learning random languages like swedish, finnish and japanese
Music ~ I play the Yangqin (Chinese Hammered Dulcimer), Piano and Guitar and I enjoy learning about theory
Science ~ I always loved going to those Science museums when I was little ^^</p>

<p>Schedule:</p>

<p>Freshman:
Bio Honors: A+
Geometry Honors: A- (screwed up the final here haha)
Western Civilization Honors: A+
English 9 Honors: A
French II: A
Latin I: A+
Foundations of Theater (Shakespeare): A+
Foundations of Art: B+
PE: B+</p>

<p>Sophomore:
American History Honors: A- (really hard teacher >: )
Chemistry Honors: A+
Algebra II and Trigonometry: A+
American Literature: A+
French III: A+
Latin II: A+
Guitar Workshop: A+
Foundations of Computer Science: A
Public Speaking: A-
Social Justice: A+
PE: B+/A- (not quite sure on this)</p>

<p>Junior Year (classes chosen, unsure of grades but they should still be all in the A range):
AP Bio
AP World History
AP Calculus BC (My school makes us take AB first, but I'm skipping it)
Creative Writing
French IV
Latin III
PE</p>

<p>Senior Year:
I'll probably take AP Chem, AP Psyche and AP Stats (maybe AP Comp Sci)
Not sure about the other classes yet.</p>

<p>ECs (Still working on these):</p>

<p>Presidents Service Award (twice)
Sinovision Talent Show (broadcast on TV and highly advertised on Sinovision, did Yangqin songs and group songs a bunch of times)
World Peace Orchestra (played with them on their first year with the Yangqin)
Part of this Youth Asian American Music Orchestra (Bimonthly rehearsals, and basically monthly performances)
French Honor Society
Latin Honor Society
Model United Nations
A random club (nothing special about it though)
Taking Columbia summer classes this summer
Volunteering at a hospital this summer too
Sun Yat Sen University "Finding Roots" program (10 day 'camp' in Chinese ethnicity non-chinese nationals)
I might start a Language Learning Club next year / sometime (for fun ehehe, but i feel like i'd be too scared of starting it)</p>

<p>Provided I continue working on ECs and keep up my grades + maybe get to like 2,300s on the SAT, do you think I'd be able to make it in ED to Columbia? It's my dream school, and it has a linguistics program that I really like.</p>

<p>Well academically you are on par and your ECs are very impressive so id say you have a decent shot. </p>

<p>not sure about the rest. the most important thing you need to do for the ivys is stand out. </p>

<p>I agree with sloth83 on his school ratings for you. However, academically you are normal, for an Asian. Sad but true. (I’m an Asian too and I’m below normal :() Keep it up, but don’t rely on your grades for getting you into college. Definitely improve that SAT score, but also keep in mind you don’t need a 2400. Your ECs are great, but a little leadership and competition would help. Don’t hesitate to create clubs. Honestly, the worst thing that could happen is that the club doesn’t get created. Just go for it. Good luck!</p>

<p>Stats are good, you are about average for an asian though. Good schools like these have tens of thousands of similar asian school drones applying. You need to be different. Who is an admissions officer going to remember more, one of 1000000 NHS presidents or a muscle car driving sky-diver?</p>

<p>Yeah, I realize that my grades really aren’t anything special. </p>

<p>I’m kind of going to stress how much I like to learn languages and music (especially my ‘rareish’ instrument ^w^)</p>
