I'm currently a freshman at the University of Tennessee and I was wondering if I should apply here. I know engineering admissions are very competitve, so I'm wondering if I at least have a shot of getting in. In high school, I had a 3.7 GPA, ~4.1 weighted, 32 ACT composite (33 math, 32 science), but very few extra curriculars (astronomy club, JROTC, some NYLF forum at UCLA). Right now at UT, I'm enrolled in Honors Calc I and Chem, Engineering Fundamentals, and English I, expecting between a 3.8-4.0 GPA for the first semester.

First of all, will being a student at UT (with a pretty mediocre engineering program) hurt my chances very much? Also, how much do they weigh high school stats for transfer students? Any input would be appreciated.

UIUC engineering generally accepts transfers only into junior year -- you need at least 60 semester hours at time of transfer. You also have to complete minimum course requirements in math (at least three courses starting with Cal1), chemistry (one or two courses depending on program), physics (at least a year of calculus based physics and possibly more), foreign language (need to have completed through third college semester of a language or 3 years of same language in high school), and a writing course. Minimum GPA for CE is usually 3.2 but you often need higher to actually transfer. Also, unlike freshman admissions, UIUC gives favor to in-state residents for transfer admissions. Completion of required courses and college grades are most important factors, SAT/ACT test scores and high school grades are not considered, and being from UT will neither hurt nor help.

Thanks for the information; I guess I should have done my research first. What are some other reputable engineering schools that you think I would be a good match for if I wanted to transfer this year?
