Legacy at Cornell (grandfather)

im applying to the engineering school at Duke, Princeton, Columbia and Cornell (Cornell is my first choice)

Any thoughts on my chances?

any thoughts...?

I think you have a pretty good chance at all three. You'll be competative. Just a note, I'm also engineering. Cornell WAS my first choice last year, as well. ;)

bump.............

you have a good shot at cornell, esp b/c of the legacy...your academics are just about right. the only problem that might arise is that your ec's don't really corroborate your interest in engineering, and are kind of ho-hum...but good essays/recs will more than make up for that.

columbia and duke are prob. slight reaches, for the same reasons, and you don't have the legacy advantage for these...

princeton is a far reach, only b/c princeton applicants are rather obscenely hardcore.

good luck!

cornell's a low reach/high match (it's still an ivy after all...)

duke/columbia are reaches

princeton's a high reach, simply because that place is crazy and your SAT2s/ECs are slightly lacking...

having said etc with your ECs its hard to know how many more, and in what depth, right now they seem average (sorry), class rank is strong but how competitive is your school and what is your GPA?

with good SAT scores and relatively good SAT IIs

I would say you have a shot at all of them:

Cornell as the highest and princeton the lowest
the lack of ECs make you come accross at first glance not well rounded enough- unless u are a real good athelete (u didnt mention it so im assuming not).. however the legacy at Cornell will make you stand out and that is a plus.. good luck with all of them!

I think you have a definite shot at Cornell, considering the legacy, and your ECs/honors. Nonetheless, please keep in mind it is an Ivy League school-- anything can happen.

Duke and Columbia, as said before, are reaches, as they are for anyone. Your stats are within their range (although the two SAT II's might be a tad bit on the low side). Princeton is a high reach for anyone, but sending in application does no harm, seeing as you are generally a decent candidate for the school.

I think you'll get into Cornell and have a decent shot everywhere else, although they are definitely reaches.

thanks, i qualified for the AIME so hopefully that will at least be something that can back up my engineering interest as far as EC's go...and my gpa is 93.1 unweighted, 103.1 weighted

I think you have a really good shot at Cornell. While your activities do not directly relate to your interest in engineering it shows that you are a well balanced student. I don't really think that there are many activities that could demonstrate your interest in engineering other than a summer course. I think that fact that you are taking science and math AP courses are enough to support your interest in engineering

does anyone think I should retake the physics sat ii in january? i am, after all, applying to mechanical engineering, and i'm positive that if i study i could raise the score to atleast 750

Yeah, it certainly doesn't hurt to retake it (if you think you will be prepared).

I think you've got an excellent chance at Cornell.
As for those who say your EC's don't correspond to your interest in engineering, isn't Mu Alpha Theta a math organization?
As for the other schools you might want to retake physics.
