Chances for Cornell ILR ED

Hey, lemme know my chances!

My school doesn't rank students.
I am Hispanic, and applying as a URM.

4 weeks as a CIT teaching archery and looking after kids all day/night at my old sleep away camp
2 years in my school's Business Club
2 weeks on a sailing teen tour

Essays:

Common App: wrote about experiencing failure (did not make the varsity tennis team junior year, but coach realized my effort and determination and put me on the team. Said I learned not to judge people just by numbers, that their character is just as important, and to never assume that a position is yours because even new players can unseat the best old ones)

Cornell ILR Supplement: writing about how my various interests in history, psychology, and business play into the ILR curriculum and how it will help me be successful in the business world.

Awards:

Local award from the library in a writing contest (fiction, junior year)

Recommendations:

One from my math teacher (she loved me)
One from my creative writing teacher (should be very good)
One additional recommendation from the coach of the varsity tennis team

Hooks:
Hispanic, award in writing (ILR loves English skills apparently)
If it matters, I've visited Cornell twice now and went to an ILR Information Session yesterday.

Thanks a lot! Let me know if I missed anything!

Your within Cornells stats standards-- if you could get the gpa to a 3.7 this semester that would be great – Its great that your hispanic, will definitely help alot – uhhh I think it will come down to your essay, but for right now you have a great chance!

Thanks! BUMP please!

I think the only part that is stopping Cornell from being a solid chance is theta you are not taking Calc senior year. Other than that i think Cornell is a great place to apply ED.

Hmmm I thought math wasn’t particularly emphasized in ILR (no math prerequisite). Thanks! Anyone else?

Mid Reach. Cornell is quite big on awards from what I understand. Your awards should somewhat connect to what inspires you.

Thanks bump

Add four years of babysitting (both paid for another family and unpaid for my brother) to my EC list!

I was seriously considering ILR and learned a few things in my research about it, the school is highly career oriented and very focused on Business/Law. You are at the score mins for Cornell, but if you dont get in it would be because you have very weak EC’s in their view. The only Business/Law EC you have is the business club, and at your income level its hard to justify not trying to pursue other career oriented EC’s like trying to start a business or cold-calling all the law firms in NYC to see if one may give u a volunteer/unpaid position.

That being said you could possibly get in, its just your EC’s are a weakness that may prevent you from doing so.

I have no connections to that field and seriously doubt that my income alone would prevent me from going. I also have no interest in law. From what was given to me, I made the best of that, and I think that’ll show through more than some BS “volunteer” office work. Thanks. BUMP.

You have a decent chance… my friend, also in ILR got in ED and is very similar to you. Better grades, significantly lower test scores, also hispanic! good luck!!! i am applying ED to Cornell Human Ecology. Chance me!

ILR focuses a lot on fit. It’s good that you have the business club. A lack of other related ECs does raise some concern, but obviously there isn’t time to do anything about that at this point. Stressing your interest in the school in your essay is very important.

Thanks!

You seem to have a decent chance and applying early is a smart choice. Nonetheless, there are still some things that could be better, such as GPA, course load, and SAT score. Your extracurricular are fairly standard. I know some schools within Cornell favor in-state students, and if IRL is one of them, then your chances should be a good deal better. Being an URM will help too, but I don’t know if it’s a big deal. Overall, you should be fine. Thanks for chancing me and good luck!
