Chances for Cornell University?

Hi everyone. Can some one give me an idea of what my chances are for Cornell? I'm interested in Environmental Engineering.

I'm 17 years old, a Male, a HS Senior, Middle Eastern, and I speak fluent Arabic and English.

SAT (taken twice)-
Math:750
Reading:730
Writing:770
Total:2250

SAT Subject Tests-
Math Level 2: 760
Physics: 750
Biology: 750
Chemistry: Taking in December, can expect around a 750 (hopefully)

AP's-
Biology: 5
Physics B: 5
Physics C Mechanics: 4
US History: 3 (but i guess I don't have to report it)
Currently a Senior taking AP Chem, AP Statistics, and AP Calculus AB

Extra Curriculars-
Math League
Science Olympiad
Track Team
Yearbook Committee
School Newspaper (head of tech section)
Model Congress
NSHSS Member (throwing that out there)
Working on starting an Environmental Protection type thing at school

Volunteer Experience-

I generally Volunteer at school when I can

Awards-
National Merit Commended (PSAT of 203)
AP Scholar with Honor Award
A few Science Olympiad awards here and there

GPA/ Class Rank-
Ok, so this is where I take a HUGE blow:
9th GPA: 3.15
10th GPA: 3.95
11th GPA: 3.82
Total High School GPA: 3.65 (UW)

My School doesn't rank in any way.

So this is the problem, everything seems fine, but my GPA is horrible, all because of 9th Grade. My guidance counselor has said that it is the only thing that may stop me from getting into a high ranking college. Do you think that Cornell may notice that my performance improved drastically after 9th Grade? I'm doing fine in school right now and can expect a good mid year report. I'm also a talented writer and can write a good college essay. I take all honors/ AP Classes. I can expect good recommendation letters. Any idea of what my chances are? Thanks in advance.

I'll do my best to chance back by the way.

Yes, it is definitely a plus that you’ve started improving after freshman year. It’ll look really good on college applications because it shows that you’re putting in a lot of effort. Your SAT scores are well done, and if you were to estimate your ranking what would it be? Anyway, you have really good EC’s and awards, you’re looking on the bright side for Cornell. Good luck! :)

@hichristen Wow, I didn’t expect that I would have good chances even with my GPA. Thanks!

I think you have 0% chance of getting into Cornell. Dont even think about ivy’s with those stats. Your SAT score is ridiculously low…i mean who gets a 730 in CR? thats way too low. Your GPA is even worse…and at least put some effort in ur EC’s. Honestly, You shouldn’t even apply to college, i advise you to go to a community college for 2 years then transfer to any state college. Or just become a garbage man aka “Sanitary Engineer” they make 80000 a year in NJ/NY

Good SATs and APs, and decent ECs. Your GPA is a little low, but there is an upward trend.

If you are applying under RD, I would say Cornell is a low reach.

Don’t listen to mufasa24, you have a good shot of getting into Cornell, especially if you explain in your essays your improvement over the years and apply ED. Phage you had any leadership positions in high school: stress those. Good luck!

Chance back please?

Don’t listen to mufasa. I think you have very decent chances.

@mufasa24 lol, obvious ■■■■■ is obvious.

@ramzee excluding your GPA that all looks alright to me. I’d be proud of myself if I had those volunteer hours under my belt…(alas, my weakness is Tumblr). The fact that you’re bilingual I think would be beneficial as well. Good luck on your acceptance, I’m applying there as well for architecture!

@StanleyJuCu @YeahBuddy007 @copticbishoy @zenorchid Thanks guys, I appreciate the replies  Good luck to you guys with your applications!

I was looking at an older thread first before I found this one. Hopefully because this one is more recent I can get a response. For starters here is some background information. I am currently attending Northern Virginia Community College and I am finishing my first semester. I plan on applying to Cornell at the end of my second year. I currently have A’s in all my classes so far so I would assume that would be a 4.0. In addition I was very sick in high school and I was lucky to come out with the GPA I did (have chronic joint pain in every joint in my body). In terms of my SAT I have to go find my scores but they were mediocre I plan to retake it October of next year and study my butt off during the summer.

My Stats:

Major applying for: Accounting
Applying for transfer as a: Junior
High School GPA: 3.0
Current GPA: 4.0
Courses Taken:
German
Accounting 211
English 111
Western Civ
Essay: Have yet to write one but I know how important this aspect of the application is.
Recommendations: German professor who went to school at Georgetown (don’t know if where he went is relevant), a business professor from Georgetown University McDonough school of business, my accounting professor, the head of the Employee benefits security administration IT department at the US department of labor, and I’m sure that I could find more if need be.

Extra curricular activates:
-Interned at Georgetown McDonough school of business working with business professors and assisting students with IT
-interned, worked and currently employed at the US department of Labor doing IT

  • I started my own video game business with some friends of mine
  • Go to the CES in Las Vegas every year to network with real professionals in the business world
  • Was the VP of the German club before the program was terminated at my high school
-Played football for 3 years in high school
  • I am also planning on taking a non student business class at Georgetown university next summer which does count as college credit

I just want opinions of my current status and want to know what else I can do to improve my chances.

Good luck to all
