Chances for Dartmouth

I am a current HS senior, and i applied to Dartmouth a month and a half ago. Recently, i was deferred from UVA in state. Dartmouth is my top choice, and my confidence lessened after my UVA deferral, so I’m asking here. What are my chances

Not good if you were deferred by UVA. It is worth applying for schools at that level, but may not have good chance with GPA and URM.

I mean ORM

@sattut on my UVA application, I listed that I was in a car accident on the misdemeanor and disciplinary section of Common app, but I was not charged, and I removed it before I submit my Dartmouth application. Is it possible that this is why I was deferred?

No. If you weren’t charged, then the college shouldn’t take that into account. What part of VA are you from?

From what I can tell as an in-State parent, UVA deferred a lot of in EA state candidates with great scores, and admitted many with lesser scores this year. It’s pretty hard to read what any other school will do from what UVA did - at DC’s school there does not seem to be any consistent pattern this year.

— your rank looks really good considering the GPA- is your school highly ranked? I would think the rank would be what matters rather than a number

@KAGANJA123 I go to a fairly competitive high school in Prince William County, VA, and I take some math and science classes at a local university

Sorry, but I do not see anything besides an attractive ACT score that stands out on your data sheet profile.

The two schools to which you applied have a lot of similarities, but your profile suggests schools like Virginia Tech, RPI.

Did you apply to WFU ?

Also, what was the score on your other ACT ?

Dartmouth will not care whether you were admitted to UVA ED. Just keep working hard. There are many great schools out there. Take a look at Northwestern, Boston University, UNC-Wilmington, University of Colorado - Boulder, Arizona State University - Tempe, and Fordham College. Best of luck!

moderator’s note

I really don’t understand the whole concept behind chance threads.

You have already submitted your application. a bunch of random strangers will not be able to accurately assess your chances. The first round of likely letters will start going out shortly. then the RD results will go out.

I know that the wait can be stressful, and I don’t understand why you would want to add more stress to an already angst ridden process. What would you do and how would you fee it people said no chance, just because it is Thursday? You would say what do they know and wait on your admission decision. So just wait for your admission decision

Make sure that you applied to a balanced list of schools, including an option that is financially feasible for your family. Breathe

Although anybody’s chances for Dartmouth are low, don’t get discouraged because of 1 deferral. You may just not have been a good fit for UVA! I’ve read about people getting rejected from safeties but getting into reaches, waitlisted at matches but accepted at Ivies, etc. etc. I saw one person get rejected from all safeties, matches, AND reaches (it was a healthy and variable list, mind you)- except Yale. You never know how much of a good fit the AO thinks you will be!

If I’m being honest, I don’t think you stand a good chance in the admissions process at Dartmouth. You have WAY to many B’s and B+'s in my opinion. Although, if you’re good at writing essays then you stand a chance. Overall, I’d give you a 5% chance or so.
