Chances for Davis <333 Band-uh! :P

I’m planning to major in psychology, and UCD seems to be one of the best research schools around along with a great campus environment. But, will I be accepted…?
Here’s the information for the generic student who’s stressing over college.

UC GPA : 3.42

SAT’s :
SAT Reasoning Test: 2020 ( 720 CR, 610 Math, 690 Writing (8 on essay))
SAT II’s : Physics (710), U.S. (640)

I just took SAT 2 Lit this weekend, hoping for a good score…But I still have another chance in November.

I also plan to take the ACT in October, and hopefully do well in it.

AP: AP U.S. History (4), AP Art History (3)

Rank : 139/728 (the top 25% is very competitive, but still no excuse for my poor ranking :/)

Extra Curricular: 4 year member of Speech and Debate ( 8th place in Novice Champs policy debate)
4 Year member of National Forensics League (yes it’s the NFL, but it’s the Speech & Debate league). I’ve helped judge a lot of events for my coach or at other schools as needed, and a strong relationship with the team which is ranked in the top 100 teams <3.)

3 Year member of Tennis (2 year J.V.[Sophomore to Junior Years], 1 year Varsity [Senior Year])

2 Years Frame by Frame member (kind of a founder)
It’s a graphic animation club (flash, photoshop, etc.), which died out at the end of my Junior year for whatever reasons.

I’ve taken the hardest classes that I could…

Senior Class Program

 1. AP Economics (macro and micro)
 2. AP Psychology
 3. AP Physics B
 4. AP World Literature
 5. Japanese 5/6
 6. Foods 1/2
 7. Speech and Debate 3-8

I signed up and was accepted into AP Calculus AB, but the stupid school could not hire enough teachers and put me into Foods as the “replacement”. In order to clear this up, I hope to comment on this altercation within the comments section in the UC application.

Well, if anymore questions be needed, please post here. I’ll post up a list of all my grades A.S.A.P.

Thanks to everyone that takes the time to just read this. A chance post would be most appreciated!

Due to your gpa, I'd say you have about a 33% chance.

That is a UC GPA not a highschool GPA. I think you have an excellent shot with all of the other things you have going for you. Good luck!

Your wrong collegemom16, that IS a high school gpa.

Hm...what? I don't understand the differences or how they matter.

The average UC gpa acceptance rate for Davis for 2007 was I believe a 3.89

Collegemom16, it would be better if his 3.42 was not a UC gpa, but in fact it is. If it is a non-UC gpa, then that would mean that his UC gpa would be higher which would be more in his favor. But he said that is his UC gpa.

Nate UC GPA's are typically lower than high school GPA's.

Are you kidding me? 33% chance? Just because the average gpa was 3.8, that doesn't mean that they don't accept students under that. Because, in fact, fifty percent of the students who go there had under a 3.75. Lots of people apply to Davis, but their yield is quite low (meaning lots of people who apply to UCB, UCLA and UCSD apply to Davis as a safety and never go, thus the GPA is higher). And his SAT is like 300 points over Davis' average.

I don't get why people put Davis on some selective pillar on this site: it's 60 percent acceptance. It's tough to get into, but you act is if it's one of the most selective schools when it's not. UCD has a high average GPA, but that's due to public school inflation. Just look at its average SAT scores; they're not nearly as high compared to the high GPA's.

I would say he has a great chance to get in. Hell, I know people who had 3.3's and lower who got into Davis (granted, with tough private school GPA's).

Uhhhhh, that's why I said he has a 1 in 3 chance knucklehead. The average gpa of 3.89 is only an AVERAGE, which means some are lower and some are higher. With that said, his gpa is of 3.42 is on the low end. He still has an outside chance.

I forgot to post my background information.... lol..

Oh, some background information.

I'm an Asian/Chinese that comes from a low-income family, in which my dad is the only one that works (works at a fast food place). My mom cannot work not because she's lazy, but because she is physically weak. She's battled cancer once before, and currently is tackling cancer once again. My highest priority is to stay close to home, even if I do get accepted to a college thats prestigious but far away. It all depends on my mother's situation along with my families financial status. This isn't meant to be a sob story; just hoping for some advice.

Have either of your parents graduated from college?

nope, im 1st generation

You are going to get a lot of extra points on the UCD application for hardship and first generation to college. Additionally you have great EC's and really excellent test scores and have taken a rigorous course load. The only weakness is GPA. I think you will have no problem getting in. If I were you I would apply to UCLA and Berkeley too.

I doubt i'll get into UCLA or Berkeley :P

if Mark reads this, he's a loser :)

If you have any interest, apply to the more competitive UCs as well. I would agree w/ Collegemom16. I have a niece at UCSD and a family friend at UCLA who got in with limited stats, but a good amount of "extra" points due to 1st generation college, low income, family hardship, leadership, etc.

Oh, thank you ma'am. My heart would be content at the middle UC's...I just want a good education.

Yeah, I'm applying to Berkeley even though I know I'm not going to get in. About the same GPA, a little higher SAT and good EC's. I know I won't get into Berkeley, but I'm not too worried about getting rejected from Davis. Tons of people from my school with similar stats or worse have gotten accepted.

Decent shot with the test scores. In the essay talk about your hardships and you should have a pretty good shot of getting in.
