Hey, everyone. I’ll be applying to UW very soon. Specifically, I want to be admitted directly into the CS major. What are my chances?
GPA Weighted: 4.17
ACT: 34 Composite (36 English, 28 Math, 34 Reading, 36 Science)
SAT: Getting my score in a couple of weeks
SAT Subject Tests: Math 2: 710, US History: 710, Molecular Biology: 660
AP Classes: APUSH (5), AP Statistics (4), AP Human Geo (3), AP Calc AB (5), AP Bio (4), AP English Lang and Comp (3) AP Physics C (), AP Spanish (), AP Calc BC (), AP World History()
CS Related Activities: Self-studied computer science throughout high school; built my own PC; learning JavaScript in an elective class right now
Location: Out of state
Race: White
Gender: Male
Financial Aid: Won’t apply for aid
I’m not sure how direct admission works for CS, but I think it would be really cool to be accepted directly, because I’ve heard UW’s CS program is hard to get into as a sophomore. I’m slightly worried that my 28 math score on the ACT will hurt me… the first time I took the ACT, I got a 32 on math. What do you all think?
Additionally, in my application under Additional Information, I will write a 200 word essay about why I want to be a CS major at UDub explaining why I’m passionate about CS and why I want to be a part of the department.
Send both ACT scores so that they wil see your best math score. Your AP Calculus scoreof 5 should compensate for your ACT math. This year the acceptance rate into CSE from high school was less than 5% so even with high scores and high GPA it is very difficult to get into.
@SingleChild Do you have a source that says it’s only for in-state students? If so, that’s unfortunate.
I didn’t think it would be the case because I didn’t read anything about it on the CSE’s Direct Admission information page that you linked.
I got this info from my friends accepted to UW CSE as direct admits. But I suggest to e-mail the advisors from CSE department and ask, they are very helpful. This way you will know for sure.
