I'm a full IB student predicted grade 40/45 (HL: Math, Biology, Business and Management SL: World Literature, Japanese, Chemsitry)
Class rank: The school doesn't rank but i'm not sure if i'll be in the top 25% (will explain later)

Awards

Was placed top 100 and 200 for several national math tests

I have two things that're really stressing me. Firstly, my class rank is appalling as I doubt i'll be in the top 25%. But my highschool is ridiculously competitive. Of the 100 or so students each year, we average about 30 students who score higher than 40 in their finals. Class of 2013 had a historically low 22 students who scored 40+ with only one 45 and three 44. Will colleges take into consideration the competitiveness of my highschool when they see my class rank?

Also, I'll be taking my IB finals november this year. This means that while the ED process will be done with my predicted grades, I will have my IB finals score available for RD. Will colleges consider my not-so-impressive predicted scores when they have my final score?

Please chance me for
Duke (ED) Cornell, Brown, JHU, UC Berkeley, Northwestern

Thank you in advance for your responses.

Bump :(

You don’t give class rank - what is your GPA? What are your grades like? Mostly A’s? I am unfamiliar with the finals scoring.

I got into BME JHU, SAT 2320, PSAT 228, top 1%, high GPA, lots of extracurriculars & leadership. Did not apply to the others

I was not admitted to JHU with a 34 ACT (around a 2250 SAT) and a 4.0, but I did get into P and Duke. I only say that to show how much of a crapshoot some of these colleges are.

The only thing I’d worry about is your class rank, which you should try to explain, or get your guidance counselor to explain. Duke won’t look at that favorably, so I think that is the single most difficult thing to get past in this process. Do your best to get A’s first semester senior year and emphasize that you took the hardest classes possible.

I might as well chime in too - I was accepted to Northwestern and Cornell (although I also applied to JHU BME but was rejected) with a 2260 SAT, 4.3 WGPA, and multiple leadership positions. I have to agree with SneakyWalrus - these colleges are all so selective that getting into any of them is a crapshoot. You seem to have good scores, but it is hard to say for certain where you will be accepted. I would say…

Duke: Reach
Cornell: Low Reach
Brown: Reach
JHU: Low Reach
UCB: High Match
Northwestern: Reach

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies! anyone else?

If your school sends in a class rank where you are outside the top 25 percent your chances at these school are really low. You ideally need to be in the top 10 percent.
