Chances for Duke, Penn, Cornell

I am a junior, and my school is very competitive, of the 450 person class we typically send about 80 kids to the Ivies + MIT + Cal tech, another 120 to UVA, and about 100 to William and Mary or VT. We don't rank so I am not sure exactly where I stand in my class, but probably top 50.
GPA: 4.211 weighted, but straight A's so far this year :) Upward trend from freshman year.

Outside of the typical all honors course load I took:
AP CS AB (A in the class, 5 on the AP)
Summer Chemistry (B+ >.<)
AP Chem (B+ in the class, 5 on the AP)
AP Physics C
AP Calc BC
Organic Chemistry (A, post-AP)
Artificial Intelligence 1 (A, post-AP)
Artificial Intelligence 2 (post-AP)
Quantum Physics (post-AP)
APUSH
*note B+ = 90-94

SAT: only taken once, but Math (800) Reading (800) Writing (670, writing fail). Probably will take again
PSAT: 225
SAT 2's: Math 2 (800) Chemistry (790)

EC's, awards etc.: Wrestling 4 years, JV first 2 years, Varsity third year, Varsity Co-Captain next year
Bridge club 4 years, President next year
Biotechnology club 4 years, Treasurer third year, next year elections yet to happen
Jewish Culture Club 4 years, VP third year, VP next year as well
Scholastic Writing gold key award
5th place Local Chem Olympiad (top 3 were perfect scores, and top 2 were top 50 in the nation last year >.<)
NHS member
Teaching 1st Grade Hebrew school for 3 years
Running an Ulpan (remedial hebrew) class as a volunteer
Internship over the summer, extended to mentorship during school. Should be published for chemistry.

I know I have no shot for HYPS, since those are taken mostly by the top 30, but what about lower-tier, but still highly selective schools such as UPenn, Cornell, Duke, UChicago? Thanks!

ur fine. regardless what anyone says, i learned the SAT is the ONLY THING THAT MATTERS since recently finishing the college application experience and ur SAT is fine for all of them. don’t be gay and take them again u will be able to get into all of them besides regardless of what they say no one cares about writing anyway.

Good chances everywhere, but I disagree with the user above me. If you think you can do better in writing, which I’m sure you can based on your 800 in CR, then you should definitely take them again.

interesting, though I don’t think it is just SAT, though raising it can’t hurt.

Seems to me like Duke and Chicago are target schools and Penn is a low reach. If I were you, I’d definitely retake the SAT for something over 2300.

Seems like a pretty strong application. Your SAT scores are strong, your EC’s might not be that unique but you have done many of them for 4 years which REALLY stands out with adcoms. It really boils down to your essays and recommendations, primarily recommendations for UChicago (they put a lot of emphasis on essays).

Cornell - low reach
UPenn - mid reach
Duke - mid reach
UChicago - high match (mainly because UChicago doesn’t care about Writing and without the writing you have 1600 out of 1600 on SAT)
H/Y/P/S - in between middle and high reach (though you definitely have a better chance the average applicant)

Wow. Your school seems really advanced.

Cornell- high match
Penn- low reach
Duke- low reach
Chicago- match
HYPS (high reaches (they are for all), though I think that you kinda fit Princeton’s archtype)

Thanks for the input. From what I can tell I should have one extremely good rec (aka star standout student, one of the best i have ever had etc), and another just ok one. My essay should be good, even if my writing style doesn’t fit the SAT’s plan. Some info I realized I missed:
took AIME this year (did ok, got a 6)
senior schedule:
AP gov
AP lit
Geosystems
AP stat
Multivariable Calculus/Linear Algebra
Mentorship
Econ/AMT
everything not AP is honors, except for obvious post APs.
And to answer IZahiri, our school is fairly advanced, US news & world report ranked us number one for the third year in a row…
Any other opinions?

You really have a great chance of getting in anywhere with such good grades, especially since you are from such a prestigious school. Your Ecs look good too, although they seem to be mostly academic and leadership based; some arts would do you well there. Your SATs should also help you get in, as you have excellent scores:
Penn - Low reach
Cornell - Low reach
Duke - Low to mid reach
Chicago - Match
HYPS - Reach, but you have a shot. Don’t give up

Chance me back please - http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/899767-chance-me-harvard-princeton-yale-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

tencharacterbump!

i went to tour Cal and one of the guys said that he got a 1600 on the sats but had an extremely high gpa. you have a shot at low tier schools but u should consider the top tier UC’s. it’s not only stats. one girl i know got accecpted to ucla with a 3.96 gpa overall weighted but she did a ton of community service and extracurricular. she wrote an amazing essay also. she scored a 1530 on her sat’s. so i think its not just stats they are looking at. its a holistic application that stands out. your gpa and sat are great by the way but try to think more broad.

I’m assuming you go to Thomas Jefferson?

You’ll most likely get into all of those schools. Lighten up a bit and enjoy your high school years. You don’t always have to be an overachiever like your classmates (I know some of them very well).

haha underachievement is apart of my personality, don’t think I can change that. I doubt I will make it into all of these schools, personally i would be pretty happy with 2-3. Any more chances?

I think that for Cornell and UChicago, you’re good. If you want to get into Columbia, you have to retake the writing SAT because it is a requirement for them.
For Duke, I think that it is a mid-reach.
After all, who knows, some kids that you didn’t expect of it are accepted, and some that have spectacular profile aren’t.
Could you chance me ? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/909747-can-i-get-into-nyu-yale.html</a>
Thank you.

I incorporated your scores, GPA, leadership, and extracurriculars into a systematically devised function of calculatory means that I developed to precisely calculate percent chance of admission to various universities in the US and abroad. The results are as follows (these are the percent chances that you will be accepted at the below named institutions of higher educatory education):

Duke University: 64.312%
University of Pennsylvania: 75.010%
Cornell University: 58.884%

Please note that these are only derived from my own personal formula which seems to accurately predict admissions chances pretty well. Hope that helps!

you would have a good chance at all 3, just try to raise that writing score if you can.
@New Student 12, what is the devised function of calculatory means you created? could I take a look at it?

You’ve got an impressive resume, much better than mine. I think you have a really good shot at getting into the colleges you listed. I should have applied to TJ when I had the chance.

I would hate to go to your school

As long as you continue your upward trend in grades, fix just that writing SAT fail, probably take one more SAT II since you have just two, you’ll be in great shape. I’d say they are all matches except for UPenn, which will be a slight reach.

I’m curious to know tho, how well did you do in the Chemistry olympiad because you’re kind of vague on how far you went.

haha i made our local top 12 and got a 59/60 on the test :stuck_out_tongue: not gonna cut it. The top 2 got perfects so. I would not be surprised if we sent all 3 of our people to camp this year. (3 because our last years camp qualifier doesn’t have to take the test again to do nationals). I am taking 3 more SAT 2’s in may, US history (easy 800), Physics (same deal), and french (we’ll see…).
