Chances for Duke University

Still a junior!

ACT: 35 don't remember break down
uwGPA: 3.5 :( (upward trend, however)
Course load: 14 APs expected by end of senior year, mostly 4s and 5s; plan to take a math class at community college this summer
ECs: research in biomedical research lab (independently), science olympiad, leadership things, NHS
Volunteer: local hospital- 150+ hours, community center- most weekends
Ethnicity: African American
Gender: XY

I expect good (not great) recs but awesome essays

Attend very competitive high school in northern va

Be completely honest and do not hold back!

I do have a summer left to work on my resume a little more so any advice for improvement would be lovely

I would be very surprised if you were rejected.

35 ACT/14 APs/good ECs + URM = incredibly rare

Your GPA is a bit worrisome though, but I’d wager that colleges will look past that because of your other stats. But then again, college admissions is pretty arbitrary so you never know…

Is the school you attend Thomas Jefferson High?

Duke might be a high match if that is the school you attend, with your score and URM status, and if your research gets published or is very successful, you will be a very competitive candidate despite the UW GPA

Yeah, my gpa gives me nightmares. But I was looking at the college board page for duke and apparently gpa is not an important factor in admissions…? Idk, but it seems to be my achilles heel. And no, I don’t attend TJ.

^when I visited Duke they said the same thing, but honestly they just want as many potentially under qualified or not applicants as possible to send in that application fee and lower their acceptance rate

Yeah, that’s my suspicion. Well thanks anyway! I guess I’ll only find out come April 1st 2013!
