I need chances for:
First Picks: Duke, Vanderbilt
Second Picks: Washington University in St. Louis, UNC, Tulane, Rice
Last Picks: Johns Hopkins, Wake Forest

My major is definitely going to be something medical-related. I know for a fact I want to be a physician of some sort.

I'm currently a white, male Junior at Scott County High School in Kentucky. This is a list of everything I have done so far (classes are projected because I'm basically certain what I'm taking next year).
One aspect of this that you must know is that my school does not offer many opportunities at all....only 6-7 AP credits are attainable.

Stats:
-4.0/4.0 Scale
-Rank 1/386
-ACT - 32 (will most likely use ACT, hoping for 33-34)
-SAT - Not taken yet
-Most challenging classes offered at school:
*Honors classes 9th, 10th, 11th
*AP US History, AP Chem, AP Bio, AP Calc (AB), AP Spanish, AP English, very minimal chance of AP US Govt (trying to get the class established next year)
-ECs:
*HOSA President (medical club) - 2 years
*HOSA Parliamentarian - 1 year
*FCA Co-President - 2 years
*Spanish Club VP - 1 year
*Student Council VP - 1 year
*Community Hospital Volunteer - 2 years
*Rehabilitation Hospital Volunteer - 2 years
*Student Leader in Church Youth Group
*Member of HOSA (3 years), FCA (4 years), Spanish Club (2 years), Beta Club (2 years), Student Council (3, maybe 4, years), Youth Group (3 years)
*School basketball team (9th and 10th grade)
*(Maybe) Tennis Team (11th and 12th grade)
-Others:
*Various school/class GPA-related awards
*Various recognitions (Who's Who, National Honor Roll, etc.)
*Kodak Young Leader Award (University of Rochester)
*Participant in National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine in Chicago
*Should have great letters of rec. and a pretty good essay

ooo...duke is gonna be a hard one to get into. and unc too. esp out of state. I got waitlisted at unc, but eventually got in, but into an ivy. You have a good chance at JHU, but you have to take the sats, itll be good for you.

I go to a very competitive public school and I know a lot of kids that got into the schools you are interested in. 2 kids got into Vanderbilt with much less than you so if thats one of your first choices that is awesome because I'd say you have a very good shot there. One of my good friends got into Wash U ED and he had a 1400, worse in terms of gpa, and much less EC's. However Wash U is very though tho. I'd say you have a good shot at it. I'd be extremely surprised if you didn't get into Tulane and Wake Forest as I know a few kids who got in there with much much less than you. Rice and Johns Hopkins very tough. However I know kids who into JHU that def had less than you overall. Rice I don't know of anyone that applied but I know it is very tough. My friend got into Duke ED. He was a very good student. Same GPA as you, more APs, 1530 SAT, great SAT IIs, top 3 rank (but as i said very competitive school). He probably has a little less in terms of ECs tho. All in all I'd say you have a shot at it, but I would not call it a great one only because it is Duke.

Thats some great news. I know Duke is my hardest option, but its also the one I want the most. I'm taking the SAT as soon as the writing portion is added, so I should know soon what my SAT (and SAT II) scores are.

Its awesome to know I have good shots (and some great shots) at getting into my top schools. In the spring I am running for a state office in HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America). If I manage to get that, I have a feeling my chances with Duke would go up quite a bit.

More opinions are definitely welcome though!

sorry for intruding but what are my chances at duke??

I got into Duke, and I would say that you have a pretty good chance at admission. Although your ACT score is not stellar, it is alright. In addition, with the course load and class rank I would say that you should be optimistic.

That is so awesome that you got to meet linkin park, that rocks. If your school is widely recognized I would say you have a good shot at Rice. They love to take valedectorians (I know this is true for almost any school, but Rice especially loves them). Also, everywhere else besides duke, UNC, and JHU would be matches for you. And just out of curiosity, why is JHU so low on your list? If I'm not mistaken it is supposed to have the best medical programs in the whole nation.

My sister had 31 ACT, but first in her class as well. She had good EC's, particular in student council and four year lettermen. She was waitlisted at Wake Forest but at the time they would not accept ACTs at all, only SATs, which she was not as strong in. I don't know if that has changed at wake though.

For Duke you have an OK chance. That HOSA thing seems to be your big involvement, and though I've never heard of it, Duke probably has. Grades are obviously very good. Everything else besides those two things is just average though. My advice would be to make the essay very good, not just pretty good, if you actually want to get in.

(And I agree with you on putting Duke above JHU on your list though. We just stole away their Nobel Laureate in chemistry too! That doesn't really affect undergraduates necessarily, but it's still cool! But I'm probably (definitely) biased... Duke '08 baby!)
