Essay
Spoken truthfully from events with duke and legacy mentors in my life
Well written as told from comments from others

Recs
Assuming very good
College counselor rec may save my rank? After comparing transcripts I would be ranked 5th in the junior class below me. My counselor ensured my class that as we are top heavy she will attempt to persuade admissions offices not to value our class rank to much.

Thanks for any help!
Oh hooks: 5 aunts and uncles who graduated from duke
2 grandparents that graduated from duke

With these questions there are facts to help you see a clear answer. Take a look at the percent Duke takes not in the top 10%. then think about the percent of athletes and URMs they have. If you are not in one of those groups, being accepted outside of the top 10% of your high school would take something extraordinary.

Even as a legacy (it’s unclear if you have a parent that attended which would make you one) they want top 10%. A family friend, rejected ED, got that from an adcom this year. Of course if members of your family are significant donors, exceptions are made and you’ll be considered a development candidate.

And no, a counselor unfortunately can’t make up for rank, and she probably shouldn’t suggest to students that she can.

Dang that must suck to be in such a brutally competitive class. The top of your class must be incredible!

Perhaps your thespian commitment will impress them??? Not very many guys are as committed to singing and dancing as you demonstrate in your resume.

;)

I think you may be able to get in considering you have everything else accept the rank. They will see the school profile and read all of your recs, so all hope is not lost. I think you may make it (by the skin of your teeth, but maybe). Good luck.

Chance Me Back?

Thanks for the help everyone, I’ve spoken to someone who has a similar class rank who was accepted ED, well at least i know it wont automatically knock me out.

bump, anyone else? please?

My friend got into Duke ED and he had slightly better stats than you, and he is an amazing track runner. The thing is that our school has a ton of genius kids, so I dont think that he was in the top 10 percent. I’d say that with everything you’ve got, you definitely have a fighting chance. It isnt guaranteed, but there is definitely a chance.

Good Luck!

1 in ten was not in the top 10% last year. Was your friend a recruited athlete?
