Chances for EA Class of 2019

Hi Guys, if you can help me out it would be greatly appreciated! I'm a rising senior looking at my options, and I love UVA! I am a white male, out of state.

GPA - 97.8 unweighted (out of 100 possible)
Rank - Most likely top 5% in class of over 425

SAT (superscore)= CR- 680 M- 690 W- 710 (2080/1370)
SATIIs - Bio (700) - taking more in October (US History, World History, Math I)
ACT - 31 ( E- 32 M-31 R - 33 S - 27) - one more shot in September

According to guidance, all our classes are marked as "honors". I did the best with what I had. In fact, I even took AP tests on the side to prove to admissions officers that my work ethic was above par, and that the courses were intense. Results pending...

Extracurricular:

Speech and Debate (9,10,11,12) - (Captain) Had success in debate during all four years. Qualified for nationals all years. Highlights include being a semifinalist in the state freshman year, finishing as second seed sophomore year at states, all state debate sophomore, junior, senior year, and a top 32 in the country finish at nationals.

Orchestra (9,10,11,12) - String bass

Science Olympiad (11,12) - competitive in numerous events at regional and state level

Newspaper/Publication (11,12) (editor) - write articles for both in print and online version of the paper, promoted to editorship shortly after joining for skill and leadership ability.

Honor Society (all years available)

Work Experience:

Internship at State Senator's Office (Summer 2013) - 20 hrs a week for a month and a half. Great experience, he loved me. Probably getting a rec from him.

Internship at Cancer Genetics Research Lab at Columbia University (Summer 2014) - Along with helping the lab carry out its planned experiments, I am able to come up with my own experiments/hypothesizes and test them with the lab behind them. I will construct a pamphlet of my final findings and submit it to the app as a supplement. Everyone in the lab loves me, so I will most likely get a rec from the head PhD from the lab.

Summer Stuff:

Johns Hopkins CTY (Summer 2011) - Race and Politics Course at Lafayette College ( three weeks)

CTY Civic Leadership Institute at Johns Hopkins University (Summer 2013) - This program included 100 hours of service learning and 25 hours of hands on community service in the inner city of Baltimore. ( three weeks)

Do I have a decent chance? Please provide feedback. Thanks guys!!!

Don’t take my advice too heavily because I don’t know too much about this but you probably have a solid shot, but if you’re applying out of state why UVA if you’re going to be playing out of state tuition? good luck regardless!

iceman1239 thanks!!

What college are you applying to? (Engineering, etc.). Your test scores are a little low for OOS, fingers crossed you get them up! Otherwise I think you have a strong application. UVA really looks at the whole package. Coming from a fellow OOS debater accepted EA this past year and joining the class of 2018. Good luck to you!

Hey kickemoff, thanks for the reply. I’m probably going to apply to the school of Arts and Sciences. I’m just hoping that the holistic look to my application would be enough to get me in, and that my test scores won’t hold me back to much! Hopefully (fingers crossed) I’ll score higher this September. Have an awesome time next year at UVA!

I think you have an excellent chance. Don’t worry about retaking tests - UVA has holistic admissions, and concentrates more on GPA than test scores.

This isn’t what holistic means. Holistic means all factors are part of the application. The fact is that “chance” threads are pretty much worthless because they never provide context and students always gloss over the academics and focus on a laundry list of activities. [There’s a reason we don’t really “chance” in the UVa forum](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-virginia/1059433-chances-posts-belong-in-the-chances-forum.html).

Remember that GPAs are meaningless without context, folks.

<a href=“Notes from Peabody: The UVA Application Process: Why GPA is Meaningless Without Context”>http://uvaapplication.blogspot.com/2014/01/why-gpa-is-meaningless-without-context.html</a></p>

The conclusion of every chance post should be: we don’t know, but make sure you apply to a wide range of colleges to make sure you have some choice of colleges in the end, and to make sure that you have at least one college that is BOTH an admissions and a financial safety.

Don’t become too emotionally connected to any one college.

The net price calculators are not perfect, but they still should be used as a helpful tool in narrowing down some choices.
