oh...and SAT, which i'm really worried about. it's really hard too because i'm an asian and they expect the 800s, which i don't have.

math: 720 writing: 720 (essay 10) cr: 760
i think i will retake...those scores were all on my second sitting

subject tests: chem from sophomore year: 670 =( i didn't take it seriously
i just took math ii, lit, and history today..pretty confident on history and math and think i got killed by lit.

also taking ACTs next week.

please give me your honest opinions, suggestions, and/or thoughts! feel free to ask any questions!

Your SAT scores are fine. You don't need to retake-- they won't get you in, but they won't keep you out either.

Your musical accomplishments will set you apart. However, if music is your "life" (future career, etc.), Stanford might not be the best place for you. You will get a great education at Stanford, but music is certainly not its stronghold...

yah i heard stanford's music department is not that good...but i'm not hoping to study music at stanford but international business. i will however still play piano and compete on the side..and i kno there are really good musicians there that i can do chamber music with

Why Stanford? Why the Ivies?

Your stats are solid, but unless you demonstrate in your essays that your passion is music/piano, it'll be more difficult. It's important to show a focus/passion, and your ECs/awards show that.

Doesn't Yale have a good conservatory? I'm sure if you exploit your piano passion, you can get in at either Standford or Yale.

actually, your stuff sounds pretty typical asian

Your accomplishments in music are not typical ANYTHING. Don't let anyone mislead you about that.

^^ I think the person was referring to the fact that it's piano, which many Asians excel in.

pdef: I don't see anything wrong with editing. I edit all the time after I submit my replies.

perpetualmotion: Now I don't want to wander away from the topic. I think your piano achievements will set you apart from the crowd. You're good.

while it is typically asian to play piano, she certainly does not play typically. Winning national competitions isn't easy for ANYONE, reguardless of race. Also, you seem to show a tremendous amount of passion in your "typical asian" extra credit. If you do well at Oberlin, you have an excellent chance.

i think you're more than good enough. don't let others tell you that you're typical or anything...you more than excelled at what you love.

but...you should apply for a music major lol or stanford would be liek wth? but i heard julliard is an amazing music school, and with a record like yours, if you don't apply there, that might be very regrettable.

but anyways, just show you love music alot, and maybe look into other music schools too, so you get the best alumni/push for your musical career?

i am assuming with that dedication, you would want a career in music.

She is pretty competitive I say she gets in!

look at yale

your AP load senior year is insane...i think with your courseload and gpa you don't need to worry about your SATs. And you only need two good SAT IIs, so don't worry about chem or lit. I think you're in. Obviously it's always a bit of a crapshoot, but you definitely have a good chance. Just make sure you write good essays that demonstrate that you're not boring, you have intellectual vitality and curiosity, you're interesting, blah blah blah.

thanks guys!

the suggestion that i should major in music....well, as much as I love music it's so hard nowadays to be a concert pianist (99% end up being piano teachers) and I want to have more options. Actually..haha, business quite interests me, so I really want to go to Stanford because of their superior business school. I really hope Stanford doesn't see it as a bad thing if I don't major in music ( i will still devote lots of time outside of class on piano and compete though..it will always remain a passion)
but...i'm going to audition for juilliard and curtis anyways just to see what happens haha.
does stanford still do auditions for music??

oh..and bad update:
got my SAT II scores today. not. good. (although I was pleasantly surprised by lit since I guessed on like half of the questions but it's a bummer my surprise didn't go above 700)

math II:720
Lit: 680
US History: 690

AGH!!! I was so sure of myself on history and math to be well above 750. sigh that means..all 3 retake in Oct.
I'm REALLY worried that my SAT scores will bog me down amidst grades and ecs. it's just so frustrating...
any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
