Dear jkaplan1212 : Your SAT board scores are in the bottom quartile of the accepted class from two years back. If you were to score a 28 on the ACT, you would be on the 25th percentile of the accepted class from two years back. In order to make the grade from the bottom quartile, you have to have some special alternate criteria in your profile. Your unweighted GPA at 3.66 is between a B+ and A- which is typically not a top 10% performance (although this will depend on the high school). Those who read my reviews on College Confidential know that we do not care about high school prestige. What is your AP curriculum; what are your AP scores from sophomore and junior years?

Your extracurricular program shows one season of sports (wrestling), no leadership positions before your senior year, no music/arts, and limited high school involvement overall. That is not meant to malign your volunteerism and BBYO engagement, but what you are showing is just not enough.

We would recommend looking at other, softer, options here on the east coast should you decide to come this way. Honestly, Boston College seems out of reach based on this profile you have posted. Good luck with your search.

Hey Scottj :
I may of not been clear but when I say like 9-11 for wrestling for example I meant grades 9-11 (three seasons)

A 3.66/4 is a 91.7% Average, I wrestled grades 9-12 and did Soccer in 9th grade(forgot to include) which means 5 seasons of High School sports, Leadership is BBYO Junior (Vice President) and Senior year…I was treasurer Sophomore but it seemed kinda insignificant still deciding if I should mention it, being a volunteer camp counselor seems like leadership but I could be wrong based on what reviewers look at, and my weighted GPA is 3.8 95%. Love Club and Save Darfur CLub are both High School clubs. But yes I was not involved in any art/music EC’s. I don’t think I was very clear with some stuff, I feel like I was pretty involved in high school but then again I’ve never really compared myself to others.

I forgot to include it but my GPA is low because Sophomore year I missed about 28 days of school with numerous sinus/ear infections that eventually resulted in surgery.

AP Environmental 4
AP Bio 3

Dear jkaplan1212 : High schools typically have three seasons per year for sports - fall, winter, and spring. Participating in wrestling means that you are a one season athlete despite having participated for three consecutive years. Our point was not to question your commitment to the sport of wrestling but to remind you that the applications to Boston College will include many three season athletes throughout their High School careers with other extra curriculars and volunteerism.

In terms of GPA calculation, most universities will reserve a 3.7 score for an A- when calculating an average. Hence, a 3.66 represents a “below A-” average. The question here is whether that turns into a top 10%, top 25%, or another type of ranking. While High Schools are walking away from rankings, rest assured that college campuses will still retrofit your ranking against your peers.

Our initial review suggested that BC is a huge stretch for you based on your profile. Honestly, this looks to be the type of application which was rejected in the regular decision round over the last year. There is nothing here that shines strongly (yet) that offsets where you are with your Board Score ranking and possibly class ranking. That does not mean you should not try for admission - on the contrary, I would never recommend not pursuing your dream.

You need to be realistic here and start researching schools which are more in line with your overall profile to create a set of schools which are “expected” acceptances and “sure” acceptances (safety schools).

hmm alright, I guess I’ll have to see how the ACT goes-not taking a possible ACT score into account, my application is pretty weak is what your saying?

Dear jkaplan1212 : When we respond on chance-me threads, the real purpose is to expose areas in a profile where improvements can be made relative to other possible applicants. Read some of the other chance-me threads and compare your profile with those. Second, click on the “applicant stats” tab at the top of this page to see the results of other applicants for the Class of 2013. You will see that your numbers are trailing. Our recommendation to you was to find a strategy in your application that emphasizes what you believe is your personal strength over your peer applicants.

There will be about 30,000 applications to BC next year - about 7,000 will be accepted and about 2,250 will enroll. Ask yourself this question : what makes your application one of the top 15% in the applicant pool ? What is it that makes your application special to a reader? Think about this sincerely … you might come across an attribute that we have not yet considered in your profile. Good luck.

In BC terms, your GPA is fair and your test scores are weak. I think your ECs are fine, but I’m less enamored with ECs than most. Scottj is a frequent and accurate contributor to this board. His analysis can be clinically merciless, but I’ve never read one that I’ve disagreed with.

Scottj is not trying to talk you out of applying to BC, he is trying to get you to think of the best ways to present yourself. Furthermore his advice should be applied to any other schools on your list, whether they are tougher or easier to get into than BC.

Alright thank you both for the feedback, I know in my essays im really trying to incorperate my EC’s, and in the additional info essays I’m writing about some personal struggles I overcame, I’ll keep brainstorming. Once again, thank you both.
