Chances for ED Admission at Columbia University?

Hey! I applied early decision like a month before the deadline, but I still am pretty nervous about getting in... I also am applying to Penn, Harvard, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, University of Chicago, and Brown. I consider myself to be well-rounded and a very active leader in the community (my strengths are mainly in leadership and creativity). I love the city, and I hope to become a doctor and do clinical work as well as stem cell research.

spanish/ eastern european female

thank you for your input! please be honest with me, i really appreciate it! i want to change the world!

also, i would love to join an online network with other students applying to similar schools; we are all in this together!

GPA and Rank: GREAT!
SATs: Not bad, definitely wont help; may hurt
ECs: You dont really seem to have a passion or a trend in you ECs. Nowadays, colleges are looking for a diverse class not diverse people so you need to focus your ECs in your other apps.

Id say you have a good chance. Youre no shoo-in but you fit all the stats.

Chance back?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/804723-chances-ed-dartmouth.html

Lots of major reaches with those SAT scores unless you have a hook. Hope there are a few more schools on the list?

ahh are my scores really that bad?
ive had such anxiety with them… i do fine when i take the tests on my own but for some reason i always perform poorly…
my essay is pretty memorable i would say… it is a unique format that explores the creativity of my mind with being well cultured even though i live in a cultural wasteland

But you still need a hook… an essay isn’t going to add to the university community. Not to belittle it, because an essay can really help, but you need to emphasize your ECs in a way that they look really attractive. You have a great GPA but your scores are right outside the range. then again, a girl at my school got into MIT with alright SAT scores so you never know.

Your GPA/rank is excellent and your EC’s are decent. However, with that SAT score I’d say all of those schools are reach/high-reaches.

yeah,
im afraid they will think im a bit too well rounded
i forgot to mention im already accepted into 5 UCs because im in the top 4% of cali

theres not much i can do now… i mean i cant take the sat again because i will be under so much pressure i dont thikn i will do well

Have you tried the ACT?

There are many on CC who think a great essay might compensate for below median scores. Frankly, that’s a myth. The hooked bring the scores down and the unhooked generally have scores near the 75th percentile. That’s 770 or so for the lower ivies and 790 for HYPS. per section. The 650CR is an unusual score for an unhooked candidate.

to be honest i dont really have a hook
i have always performed very poorly on these tests
i am a math/science person (ex. 5 on ap calc and bio, but only a 4 on english), and i take the english questions in my head and completely over-analyze them and defend both sides and i take too much time and zone out and then get nervous about time and it is a vicious cycle
i am much better in a relaxed setting where i can discuss and debate and really understand the material
but colleges dont want to hear it

i think i just need come to terms that i am not good enough for these schools based on my scores… it is hard to accept, but i mean i have realized that i will never be able to do well on these kinds of things

if only there was a formula for fate…
