Essay-- strong, personal story of how younger sister’s cancer diagnosis, treatment, and passing when D was in 8-9th grade marked her transition from childhood to adulthood.

white female, NY state, suburban public HS (good but not especially high ranked; well-regarded in the area)

I should add that this is ED for Engineering. Thanks!

@OCNYmom I think you already know the answer. Obviously her stats and ECs are over and above Cornell’s highest percentile of admitted students. She’s a very strong candidate. As with most people who post on this site, including me, she is competing against applicants with very similar stats. Even her essay isn’t unique (sorry for your loss by the way). Having said that, schools like Cornell and other highly selective universities would be stupid to deny her. At worst she will get wait-listed. But there are only so many good applicants these days and not enough space. Unfortunately I applied ED for CoE so that means she and I are competing for the same spot as well. I hope your daughter has a good #2 school picked out just in case. With her stats and dedication she’ll do great wherever. Good luck.

Thank you. I realize that with any Ivy, there are more qualified applicants than slots available. We will just wait and see. Cornell is her 1st choice, but there are several other schools she likes. Good luck to you as well.

D is applying to Northeastern, Lehigh, Villanova, Drexel, SUNY Binghamton, RPI, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and Stevens Institute of Technology.
