Here are my daughter's stats... we're from the state of GA:

Kaukauna, Vanderbilt is everything my daughter is looking for! Excellent academics, in the South (she isn’t used to seriously cold weather), not far from home, beautiful school, perfect size, prestige, sports, research opportunities, incredible alumni network.

The college process has left her a bit conflicted, but she’s decided this is what she wants. So what do you think are her chances?

BTW, I know her class rank is somewhat low, but that should tell you something about the incredible students in her class, that somebody with that GPA should be #63!

I think that Vandy is now a reach for everyone … if you go through the recent ED1 decisions & discussions thread, you’ll see that kids with higher GPAs & standardized test scores were denied.

Unfortunately, it does not look good for her unless she can pull that ACT up to at least a 34, especially with that low GPA. The standardized testing dominates Vanderbilt’s admission process and allows them to weed out. Sorry for being curt, its just the awful truth at this point.

The reason I asked the question, “why Vanderbilt” is that I think the admissions officer will be asking the same question. With regards to the ACT, I think the 25-75 range in the admitted class will probably be something like 31/35, so your daughter will be just below the median probably, but still in the range. The GPA will be a concern believe it or not. That’s how selective its become. Its good that the difficulty of courses is increasing. Apply to a school / major that makes sense in light of her strengths and what she has done at school and with her EC’s.

If your daughter wants to go EDII, then I would advise her to really put her best forward with whatever she can in the application, but EDII is better than RD! I hope she can get great recommendations also.

I have to wonder if demonstrated interest is beginning to play a part at it seems Vanderbilt is increasingly selective. And I think that may be a good question to pose to the admitted students from ED1.

I know that my daughter visited VU twice and had direct contact via email with her adcon. And the other admitted student from our HS did PAVE.

First, congratulations she has achieved a great deal in HS. Her test scores are top 1-2% and class rank is top 15%. Yes, Vandy is now a reach for everyone. It seems like everyone wants to go to Vandy now and the stats required to gain admission keep going up, up and away.
You never know. The holistic class building thing may work in your favor. In posts from last year many students with similar profiles were accepted. Many came off the waitlist in May & June. Good luck

No, I appreciate the honesty. We looked at the Accepted ED1 thread and didn’t see anybody with a 32 who posted who had been rejected, so that gave us some hope. However, I am cautioning her to be realistic, and I know this is a reach. I am definitely going to advise her to reach out to her admissions counselor.

My husband and I did consider whether she should take the ACT again, but there’s no time. Unless she gets deferred (which, of course is a possibility).

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated!

Vanderbilt doesn’t defer for ED … it’s accept or reject.

I wish your daughter much luck! Vandy was my DD’s dream school … we had really talked down her chances of getting in, knowing that there would be hundreds of applicants with the same and better stats vying for a spot. She already had an acceptance at our state flagship (honors college) under her belt (they do rolling admissions) so I think that might’ve taken the sting out of a rejection.

Thank you, KaMaMom… she does have acceptances at other colleges… good ones too. She just wants to go for it here. Like you did, I’ll be letting her know what the realistic chances are. I hope your daughter ends up somewhere that makes her really happy too!

amazing, isn’t it? when a 32 or a 3.68 has a reasonable chance of being a weakness for getting you into Vandy? I am in agreement with the advice here. Tell your D to go for it but to expect rejection. She’s certainly close.

KaMaMom… that’s wonderful! I was confused when you said it might have taken the sting out of rejection.

jkeil911 - I feel the same way! THANK YOU! 3.68 is unweighted, but for a few years, she was taking the hardest classes available and she has never ever gotten a C in any class. Mostly As. I do think she is close, but not a shoo-in.

Does anybody think sending in supplemental materials (like a video about community service that she has done) might help?

Is there hope for ED2, sibling legacy, ACT 32 UW gpa 3.5, W 4.1. HS doesn’t rank. Rigorous classes, Good EC’s, great Recs. My sis was a 4 year athlete at Vandy. Be Honest plz!

Tides23, you are in the ballpark but Vanderbilt is probably a slight reach. 32 ACT is right on the fence of accepted scores and your GPA is a little on the low side too. However, your stats are close enough where you should apply and the sibling legacy can’t hurt.
