Hi I asked for chances before but I made up my mind in choosing Rice for ED as it’s in my home state and still is a top-tier school.
2/505 Rank
4.83/5.0 weighted GPA
1540 SAT
IB/AP (10 total AP tests planned)
EC:
NHS for two years
Tutoring at middle school on fridays
Swimming Club
Orchestra (performed at nursing homes, malls, stores, clubs, etc.)
Helped out in a community group where they set up community events like Thanksgiving, Cinco de Mayo, etc.
These are my basic info and I know my EC is on the lower end but I also heard that Rice is more lenient with EC and consider academics much more. Thank you!
Around 50% of their undergrads are Texans. Your sat is on the high end of the middle 50%. 21% admit rate for ED applicants (329 of 1603 for 2017) but how many recruited athletes are also ED? The only thing I know if that your stats wouldn’t be the reason you were not admitted.
Your class rank is excellent, and you have strong test scores. Rice is probably very familiar with applicants from your school if you’re in Texas. if your school has Naviance, how have similar applicants done in the past ED and RD? T his should be a good predictor for how you will do. Have you demonstrated interest by touring, interviewing, and possibly spending a night on campus? If you are in Texas it is easier for you to visit than an out of stater.
I do want to warn against the perception that Rice is lenient with extracurriculars and considers academics much more. Most students at Rice have extracurriculars that, while perhaps tied to their academic interest, demonstrate their passions and interests beyond school. A strong academic profile is important, but don’t disregard the importance of conveying your involvement and identity beyond the classroom.
