Chances for ED? :)

Hey guys!
I’ve fallen in love with Amherst and plan on applying ED in the fall.
I’m a rising senior and am interested in bio, food science, gender studies, and Spanish.

State: NJ
School Type: Public magnet
Ethnicity: White
Gender: F
Hooks: none. parents are immigrants, English is my second language…don’t think those really count

SAT: Math 740, CR 770, Writing 710 Total: 2220 (retaking in October)
SAT II: Bio M 800, Math II 770
GPA (UW, out of 100): 97.84
Weighted GPA: N/A
Rank: N/A

I’m an IB diploma candidate.
Courses - Bio HL, Chem HL, English HL, Math SL (will take these exams at the end of senior year)
History SL - 6
Spanish SL - 7

By the end of Senior year, I’ll have taken 12-13 science courses.

Extracurriculars:

 • National Honor Society (officer/leadership position: director of the peer tutoring program)
 • FFA (since soph year - helped to revive the club, have an officer position)
 • Yearbook (since freshman year. officer/leadership position: Junior Business Manager and later the Senior Business Manager)
 • Guitar (since freshman year. just something I do for fun)
 • > 300 service hours by the end of senior year
 • Science fairs: have competed in one every year since the 8th grade. Last year I made it to FFA’s national level science fair (Indianapolis). Going to FFA national again this year. Won an award from Swarthmore.
 • JHU CTY - have attended for 5 summers. Residential program where you choose one course and in 3 weeks you cover about 1 yr of high school material/1 semester of college material (7 hours a day/5 days a week)
 • volunteering this summer rebuilding/repairing houses in West Virginia (Appalachia)
 • volunteer as a camp counselor for a science camp. was a regular counselor last year, head counselor this year (leadership)

Recommendations: One from a research/bio teacher (11th and I’ll probably have her again in 12th). She loves me so it should be good.
The other recommendation is from my math teacher (who is also the yearbook advisor). She’s known me through yearbook since freshman year and has me in class this year. Her rec should be decent.

So yeah! If someone could chance me, that’d be awesome! Please be honest :]
Thanks! :)

uhm why is your gpa out of one hundred??

My school’s GPAs are on a 100-point scale. Not every school does GPAs on a 4.0 scale. I know people who go to schools where the GPA is out of 4.5, 5.0, etc.

You have an excelllent resume and scores. Speaking as a parent, I wouldn’t even worry about taking the SAT’s again. Amherst looks at rigor and of course wants you to be in the hunt score wise—but they take your essays very seriously. Shine and showcase yourself in your essays. Teacher’s recs are important as well. My son is starting his junior year at Amherst and works in the Admin office. He says the Admin Counselors tell them all the time they are looking for kids who they can just “see” in the classroom and “contributing” to Amherst.
Good luck.
