Chances for ED1

@Corinthian I am working on essays and ACT. I have matches and safeties as well. I just want to get more feedback. My GPA and ACT aren’t going to help. I get that. I’m wondering if I have the leadership qualities that cmc is looking for

That’s a very smart move, @JHUSoccer
I don’t think being first gen is huge, but it is a factor; speaking to the tennis coach is a biggie. The men’s team won the NCAA’s last year and has been one of the top D3 programs since the 1970’s. Playing on that team is obviously competitive. But even if you are not good enough to make an immediate impact or make varsity, they will want you to make the team better and deeper.

@84stag I am trying everything in my power to get in. Can you give me tips on how to improve my act reading score?

If your tennis skills (meaning national ranking) are good enough for the coach to recruit you, you should be fine. Class of 2016 has quite a few strong players interested in CMC. Check their tennisrecruiting.net page to see where you stand against the competition.

You never said what your reading score was so considering your composite I’ll assume it’s in the mid-20s. The ACT reading is great in that you have to do very little analysis on the spot like the SAT. Rather, I found most of the answers to be almost verbatim somewhere in the passage. The ACT reading section is inherently more of a test of speed reading than it is deep-thinking. I’d get the Red Book and start off practicing untimed and just make sure you’re getting every answer right, albeit slowly, and then once you understand how the answers look work on pacing yourself quicker. Personally, I always read every passage and then answered the questions, but you may prefer looking at the types of questions that are coming whether they’re specific to certain lines or broad generalizations about the passage. If you’re scoring in the 20s I’d bet timing is probably an issue: whether you’re not finishing or answering rashly because of the constriction. If that is the case, I’d really recommend slowing down your practice tests until you’re comfortable with question types and then speeding that process up. But, in the end, you’ll have to find your own method.

@AquaVermin my reading score is a 23…not to good. My math and english are much higher. My math is a 33. My english is a 31. My science is a 28.

@AquaVermin is there any chance my ECs may change the mind of my admission officer? I’ve kept contact for 2 years with him and a current student. I also have a killer Why CMC essay and a decent common app essay. My letter of rec comes from a teacher who had a meeting with me on the baseball field just talking about summer and how impressed he was no matter how much I struggled in his class. I alwas kept a love for learning and he sees me successful wherever I go. The other teacher is my physics teacher who I also had a good relation with. I improved a lot in his class as well. Me and him were very close. I actually met him and his family in Chicago at msi…where I work and gave him free admission and a personalized tour.

@JHUSoccer Your ECs are very strong and definitely in line with what admission officers want to see. However, considering they turn away 91% of applicants, it is always possible that there is an applicant with the same level of ECs with better academic stats. Your ECs are where they should be but when a school is as much of a crap shoot as CMC is, there’s no guarantee that they’ll get you in. There is a chance your ECs get you in but there’s also just as much of a chance that they don’t. As for the letters of recommendation, I have the feeling that since almost every CMC applicant is a top student, a lot of the letters of rec will say essentially the same thing: “this student is the best in the class.” Unless you’ve done something truly remarkable that the teacher talks about, I’d bet letters of rec only reassure the admission officers that this student is qualified not unique. Your letters of rec and ECs are done and they’ll definitely get you in the door but the final step is the ACT and Senior grades.

Update: I applied ED1 and now, I’m just hoping for the best. If it doesn’t workout, I will still remember everything about my experiences with the college. I have so many people supporting me in this process at CMC so I pray the turnout is good, but who knows.

@JHUSoccer Hi! Also applied ED1 so good luck to the both of us. Are you making a video?
