Chances for Emory and Wash U St. Lois

New on this board as can be seen by my post count.
GPA=3.83 (I screwed around during middle school and the Spanish/Algebra grade showed)
SAT=2190 (Math 760, Writing 750, Reading 680)
I'm not in the top 10% >.< (My school is pretty tough there are a lot of over achievers and I am somewhat of an unorganized slacker)
I have taken 6 AP classes so far (Junior Year) and I'm taking 4 more Senior Year
ECs
I do Varsity Track and Varsity Cross Country (I'm not ridiculously beast, but I still made it to regions running a 2:10 for the 800M)
I have maybe around 200 hours of volunteering for a local medical center
I helped co-found table tennis club (prez:D)
Member of Mu Alpha Theta (math honor society)
Member of Math Team
Member of SADD (students against destructive decisions)
Amateur Ping Pong Player
I still have a whole summer to get up my ecs so I may try to do the Siemens Science Comp
(But I'm an Asian Male >.<)

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I must also ask If I have enough time to maybe prep for the ACT and take that.

Oh, also I got took some subject tests and got a 720 in Math 1, 720 in US History, and a 720 in Chemistry. I would also like to ask if I have a good chance in getting into the UGA honors program. I heard their dorm are awesome, the food is great, and tuition and board is completely affordable. (unlike the 50k+ of wash U and Emory)

Well the fact that no on is chancing is quite discouraging…but I’ll just keep on hoping.
Bumpity Bump

If there is an edit button my bad, but I must also add that I scored a 5 in AP Bio, 5 in AP World, and a 3 in AP Stat. I am still waiting on the scores for AP US, AP Chem, and AP Lang. (nvm I just found the edit button)

retake SAT I, maybe some SAT II s.

You should get 800 in SAT II math, if you are an Asian Male  kidding.

ACT is easier then SAT if you are good at reading, SAT CR/M, 50/50. ACT CR is about 3/4. just borrow an ACT test book from library, see how much you can score.

Thx for the advice and yeah I noticed that my math skills seem diminished compared to other Asian guys. I also noticed that a table tennis club was started by another poster. I guess that’s just a universal Asian thing to do. :)

I don’t think your chances at WUSTL are very good. Your ECs are decent, but you aren’t in the top ten percent of your class, which will hurt you.

I know the the 10% thing is really ticking me off, but what’s done is done. I can’t really bring it up since junior year is over. >.< (I’m close so hopefully a few of those kids that stock up on the easy classes for the higher grade will just move away)

99-100% of all students admitted to WashU are in the top 10% of their class, if ranked. Sorry…

Well that defeats my hopes of Wash U, but anyone have any ideas about Emory or UGA Honors?

Applicannot, where the hell did you get that statstic?? That is completely made up. Harvard does not even have that high of a percentage of students from top 10%. The percentage of top ten percent students at WUSTL is just above 90%

And if youre thinking about emory and youre not in top 10%, maybe consider oxford of emory. It is a college in Emory that you for go to for 2 years, then continue onto the main emory. It is easier to get into, and it is just as academically challenging

Thanks for the suggestion, I have already looked at the Oxford at Emory campus and it’s quite quaint. Well my situation is proof that you must not slack off too much in high school. (or at least not more than the top 10% :P) Hopefully UGA Honors is not too anal about the class rank. Another suggestion to everyone is that sometimes it is not good to take all gifted honors classes. I have taken all gifted honors/APs and personally my grade has taken a hit in the rankings because of it. Unless there is a grade advantage (such as added points to GPA, which my school does not do for honors classes) then stick to CP classes and AP classes. (AP classes have that added boost to GPA  )

Well i am in the EXACT same situation with you. I slacked off, just out of top 10%, high SATs, all honors and IB classes, and im looking at the same schools as you are. From what i hear, ED/EA is gonna help, and essays/recs will be a big deal.

According to the Princeton Review’s “365 Best Colleges”, 95 percent of incoming freshmen at WUSTL were in the top ten percent of their classes.

Assuming you’re from Georgia, you’ll also want to look at Rice University and Cornell as low “reaches”. Then look at Georgia Tech and perhaps Carnegie Mellon as solid “target” programs for you. All of them are excellent schools, although the latter two are geared mostly towards Techie-types.

According to peeps on the Emory board ( and based on admissions from this year), Emory does not care about class rank; unweighted GPA is more important…better chance at Emory than WUSTL…

I was off by a couple of percent. This is where I got my statistic:

To the OP:

Don’t take my words for it because I do not have an extremely intimate knowledge regarding college admissions for these schools; however, I believe there is still time to beef up your app so that you can get into WashU-type schools. Your test scores are adequate, your ECs are standard (maybe slightly lower than standard at WashU), and your GPA is below average. So, you do not have any one component of your resume standing out to me…fix that. Have you considered taking a summer class or two at your local University? An A there could assay some fears an admission officer could have when they see your class rank/ GPA. Additionally, definately invest your time this summer in a few ECs. I, for example, am doing research at my local med center and then submitting my work to Siemens. Try to do something that could potentially add a “wow-factor” to your application. If you succeed in doing this, I believe that your chances are WashU or Emory, would increase noteably.

Thx a lot for all the suggestions. Rodney I heard about the thing that you told me too. I have a friend that’s a techie who got accepted into Emory too and he wasn’t in the top 10% so I guess I still have some hope of not disappointing the parents. (Asian) On a personal level I would be OK with going to any college that’s not too shabby. I know that there is the option of GAtech, but I have heard that the classes can really skewer you. With that in mind I would be quite happy to go to UGA honors. (Besides I really want to do premed and the biochem pathway of GAtech is supposed to be insanely taxing to succeed at) Anyone that has had real experiences with this just tell me. Rumors are always abound and those rumors can really scare a college bound kid.

Oh and to Rtgrove123, I am also doing the Siemens Science Competition so “arghh prepare for a battle of scientific discovery and intuition.”
